Friedman Deserves More Face Time

from Bruce Dowbiggin of the Globe and Mail,
Why is Elliotte Friedman so underused on Hockey Night In Canada ? While the program promotes former brawler P.J. Stock doing highlights and treatises on The Code, Friedman is typically reduced – outside of a feature on the Saturday pre-game show – to the cherished “What will it take to get back into this game?” interviews between periods and after games.
While understated on-camera, Friedman is capable of an open-ended question in under 10 seconds – without the parenthetical wandering of more famous names. He is still more comfortable in front of the lens than several of the Hot Stove ‘s stock players and commands respect from players and peers. Plus, Friedman – who was recruited from The Score – would deliver a smidgen of balance to the editorial slant of the show that leans toward … shall we say “traditional” values.

Kevin Weekes has some potential when his analysis vocabulary increases a bit, and contains fewer clichés. Friedman certainly deserves more time, but HNiC is still mired in old-school Canadian hockey values that the game surpassed years ago through the likes of Cherry and Milbury. P. J. Stock is just a younger continuation of that redundant school of thought.

Yeah, it’s just too bad he’s coupled with Mark Lee. Or at least he was on Saturday, and Lee is TERRIBLE.

Not a fan of Friedman, or any of the other taliking heads that ask the same questions of coaches and between periods. I find Friedman to be dry and boring during most of his Saturday night segments.
That said, I find PJ Stock unwatchable too. As for Milbury ? I’d like to punch him in the face.
I do like the “real’ reporters they have on during hotstove, and of course Grapes. I used to really like McLean, but have found his constant interruptions of Cherry to be quite annoying in recent years.
I still watch HNIC, but it’s getting tougher , and when Don finally retires, I may stop watching altogether.

I find the majority of things Friedman does on HNIC are pretty much standard fare, however I do really enjoy his blog/“30 Thoughts” posts on cbc.ca.

CBC doesn’t get it. I think it’s maybe time that HNIC is retired and they let someone else handle things. CBC and HNIC no longer are relevant.
