Forsberg To The Avalanche

The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that it has come to terms with unrestricted free agent Peter Forsberg on a new contract through the 2007-2008 season.

“We’re proud to announce to our fans that Peter Forsberg has decided to come back and play with our franchise where he’s enjoyed so much success early in his career,” said Avalanche Executive Vice President and General Manager Francois Giguere. “His addition should complement our roster and will bring our team to an even higher competitive level.”

“Over the last several months, I have worked extremely hard in order for this to be possible. I am looking forward to putting this jersey on again,” said Forsberg. “I have so many great memories of my playing days in Denver. I’m excited about helping my new teammates and former teammates in the coming weeks, and hopefully I am able to do that in the very near future.”

Hmmmmmm...wonder if he’ll actually play (this season, anyway).

Me too K24… I was like “Wha?” F5 F5 F5… yet it must be true.  Then I saw the link to the Avs site…

This is interesting as Colorado is certainly not guaranteed a playoff spot… wonder how soon he can be in the line-up.

If Peter is healthy this makes the Avs a much stronger team.

Not a surprise, although I will contend that the Avalanche wont make the playoffs this season, they dont have great goaltending, not too mention that Western Conference logjam for the 6th, 7th and 8th spot.

Shep, I imagine you know that that 10th spot doesn’t mean much until the end of the season considering how close the standings are.

Yeah, I seriously question whether this deal actually does make the Dives a stronger team.  Didn’t work out too well for Nashville or Philly, as I recall…

from people i talked to his foot isnt still heathly. he’s going to create the same problem he did in philly.

this is the best news for flyers. avs arent making the playoffs because a)they have no goaltending and b)its going to be hard for them to even get into the playoffs because they play in a tough division and conference.

the differnce btw flyers and avs is that the flyers are only 1 point out of conference. flyers got the greatest news in the world today

Wouldn’t it be a glorious April if, since they’re in 10th place, and Fops probably won’t return for a while yet, the Avs finished the season in 8th place. How would all you Wings and Avs fans feel about that?

I, for one, hope his return sparks the team into a late season push.  The only thing more heartwarming than watching the Dive begin their off-season hormone treatments in April is watching them get their little Stanley Cup hopes up and then squashed again by Detroit.

I wonder if this is a reflection of the prices being asked for in trade for the forwards available?  That teams with ties with semi-retired players would rather take a chance because it would only cost money instead of prospects and young players they are loathe to give up.

Jeff, of course.

My issue is with Giguere’s statement. His use of “even higher competitive level” implies that his team is already at a high level. Anybody who watched them “compete” against Edmonton (presumably this would include Giguere) knows that’s a load of crap.

Looking beyond last night, the Avs own the second worst record in the conference over the past ten games. But unlike the team with the worst (which incidentally crushed the Avs last week), they hadn’t built up a 20+ point safety net in their division.

These are pretty typical detroit fan comments...I don’t really blame you!  But getting Sakic, Smyth and Stastny back, along with Foppa - even if he’s a shadow of his former self, will be pretty inspiring for them.  Not even mentioning they are only 6 points out of first in their division, things aren’t as bad as you guys make them out to be.  Goaltending will, however, be their pitfall!

I too with many people thought it was a joke when I heard about it. But after talking to some people who follow hockey in denver, and myself being a wings fan, many in denver are convinced he will help them make the playoffs. why? he’s unreliable, one slip to his ankle and he’s done. for me its 50/50 whether or not he will help. they still don’t have the depth or experience in the club to win the cup or yet have any impact on the playoffs. Too many people here are living in the old days, and are under the illusion that he’s the same now as he was then. It’s a joke, how bad people in denver think they know hockey.... *#$%@& one way fans (only cheer when they’re winning or make a deal like this that grabs headlines hear) don’t know what they’re talking about.

Used to be a player signing a contract after the season had started had to clear waivers before he could be put on the roster, does that rule not apply under the new CBA?
