Gagne’s Concussion Issues

From the AP via NHL.com,
It took two bouts of dizziness and other symptoms for the determination to be made Wednesday that Gagne sustained at least one concussion, if not two.
“First of all we didn’t know for sure and secondly I wasn’t aware of the repercussions,” general manager Paul Holmgren said. “I was under the assumption ... if he’s got a mild concussion, he’s got to be out seven days. That’s not the case.”
Gagne was injured at Florida on Oct. 24 after being hit in the jaw by Panthers defenseman Jay Bouwmeester. He sat out four games, but the Flyers never said anything about a concussion. Gagne was said to be dealing with dizziness. Gagne returned to practice after being symptom-free for two days. He followed that with a morning skate the next day on Nov. 5 before dressing for that night’s game at the New York Rangers.
Gagne came through that OK, but didn’t look like himself on the ice. Two nights later, he was hit by Pittsburgh’s Gary Roberts and the symptoms came back.

Someone should also think about smacking the Flyers’ brass upside the head, too. You would think with the history of concussions some of their players have had, they might be extra careful.
Better to miss a week or two now than come back too early and be out for the season-or even a career.

Flyers have a history of treating their players as a renewable resource, as well as a history of drafting players who treat others like it as well.

I agree that hits are an important issue to address, but in this particular case - as Baroque suggests - it appears like someone may have made a bad decision. How can they argue they didn’t know the potential repercussions of returning a player to the ice too quickly?
The idea that Gagne may have been injured by a 2nd concussion because he didn’t have his wits about him after the 1st concussion, is a pretty horrific thing to contemplate.

…a pretty horrific thing to contemplate.
And one that speaks of absolute negligence on the part of the team, it seems to me.

The NFL and NHL has been misled by former medical advisor Elliot Pelman, the answer may lie with the N.E. Patriots. The surprising fact is, the Patriots have had only one concussion this year, because 70% of Patriot players are fitted with a corrective retainer like mouth guard, NFL stats confirm a drastic reduction in concussion and its symptoms. Commonly used for TMJ therapy and designed to protect the nervous system due to prior cartilage damage, not all players wear it. Hopefully Faulk has learned his lesson and will now seek help with the team dentist. NFL players are not required to wear mouth guards, new research is underway to help develop standards which should mandate the use of the Maher mouth guard, the only mouth guard ever connected with a medical procedure resulting in a reduction in official NFL statistics. Roger Goodell should be more hands on in dealing with it’s inventor, his researchers do not understand the principles behind its success. http://www.mahercor.com

The NHL needs to do something—and do it fast—about stopping hits to the head and from behind. Intentional or not, these guys are too strong and moving too fast to not cause serious damage.
