Get Ready, Here Comes The Lecavalier Trade Talk

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,
Some people believe Lecavalier is untradeable because of the contract. I disagree. He remains one of the better centers in the world when he’s on his game and in the right environment.
Maybe we’re getting a little ahead of ourselves because perhaps none of this trade talk will ever come to pass. But if it does, it’s fun to wonder which teams will call, no? How about the Los Angeles Kings? I think GM Dean Lombardi has the green light to add a major piece this season. Anyone fancy a Lecavalier-Anze Kopitar 1-2 punch at center?
And what of the New York Rangers. Marian Gaborik is flying in the Big Apple. Imagine if he had a bona-fide No. 1 center? Imagine a reunion with coach John Tortorella?
more on Lecavalier…

The only way the Rangers could fit him in would be if they tricked Tampa into taking Redden back….

Using the John Buccigross Law of player evaluation, 29-year-old Lecavalier, is over the hill and past his prime so most likely nobody would want him anyway.
Heh heh. ![]()
Why would he want to leave, anyway? He likes it in Tampa, he is very involved in the community (didn’t he have a ward in the hospital named after him because of his donation for the children being treated, or something similar?), and he has a no-trade clause. He has seen the highs and lows of the team and wanted to stay long-term. If he doesn’t want to leave, the team can’t trade him. And the VAST MAJORITY of teams can’t afford him anyway.
Maybe all writers should have “does the trade work under the salary cap?” written backwards on their foreheads so every time they see their reflections they would be reminded that if it doesn’t make financial sense for the teams involved, it doesn’t matter how much hockey sense the trade makes. Wouldn’t work, but might at least be worth a try.

LOL- no way in hell the rangers are able to absorb Lecavlier’s salary Unless they trade either, Drury or Redden back. No way, tampa bay trades lecavlier, unless its for a boatload of prospects and picks.

No way that Lombardi wouldn’t break the budget for Lecavelier.
Furthermore, I don’t think LeCavelier would be a particularly big draw here in LA. Kopitar, Smyth and Doughty are having great seasons, the team has a solid record, but attendance is still in the mid 15,000s most nights. Vinny doesn’t have that much star power in most markets, imo… Montreal being an obvious exception.

With a yearly cap hit of $7.75 mil, how would the rangers fit him in?
and
The kings have about $4 mil to work with, so without sending at least 2 players back to tampa, they don’t have room either.
