via the Twitter of Helene Elliott,
Jean-Sebastien Giguere has waived his no-trade clause and officially will be dealt to Toronto very soon
added 12:56pm, from Darren Dreger’s Twitter,
Giguere to Toronto for Toskala and Jason Blake. Done!!
added 1:05pm, TSN on the trade…
added 1:08pm, Burke says there was never a discussion about a first round pick being involved (from the Ducks). He doesn’t know where that came from.

Here we go again. Leafs pick up 2 more bums. I think Mr. Sutter knows more about hockey then Mr. Burke and that is why he shipped out D.P. The spiral will continue until Burke and Wilson are gone from Toronto.

knowsall,
Are you dumb or what Giguere is better then Toskala. I think these deals help the Leafs especially on defense.

I’ve always been in the school of though that whoever gets the better player out of the trade gets the best end of the deal. So in that case, Toronto made a couple steals getting a Conn Smythe winning goalie and a Norris Trophy candidate defenseman for a plethora of average and slightly above average talent.

Getting Giguere is a masterful move if he can return to his usual level. They have the remainder this and next season to see if that is plausible, and then Gustavsson could be ready.
There’s risk in any trade, but Burke didn’t exactly pay in gold for Phaneuf and Giguere.

Leafs lack scoring depth unless they trade Exelby and get a scorer in return.

Let’s not kid ourselves… the Leafs are still terrible. Giggy hasn’t been consistently good for a few years now. Phaneuf has regressed two years running, especially when it comes to his defensive game… which is his primary responsibility, given that he’s a defenseman.
Toronto still needs to stockpile picks and prospects if they’re really going to rebuild and become a good NHL team. Even if Phaneuf and Giggy regain their form, Giggy’s at the end of his career, and Phaneuf is only one long-term piece in what currently looks like a current and future shit sandwich.
Of course, if you’re MLSE, all you really need to do is put names on the ice, compete for the playoffs occasionally, and you’ll still make a billion dollars on merch sales, another billion on tickets, and another billion on local TV. So this is good enough, from a business perspective.
