Gill Goes to Penguins

From TSN,

The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded defenceman Hal Gill to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a second-round and fifth round pick.

Gill, 32, signed a $6.3 million, three-year contract with the Maple Leafs in 2006.

Really?  Aww man, not only do I hate Hal Gill, but that’s way too much for him.  I wouldn’t give more than a 3rd (and maybe a 6th).  Ehhh.....

They needed the big hulking defenseman they never let Orpik become.  Well, defensive, hitting defenseman.  I don’t like this move…

Gill’s a lot better than people give him credit for.  I’m sad to see him leave the Leafs, he was a good, stable defenseman for a reasonable price… which is something I think the Leafs are lacking in.  Oh well, I guess it’s better than doing nothing.

I’m on the opposite side.  I liked Gill this year.  Good stay at home defenceman that’s pick and doesnt’ take a lot of penalties.  Good protection for the young guns on Pens.

Ryan, Karina, I hope you’re right and I’m horribly wrong.  I’m switching my concern to figuring out how we’re going to keep Staal, Hossa, Malkin, Crosby, Whitney, and Fleury all on the same payroll.  That’s gonna be ugly if we flame out in the first round this year.

I thought Hal was very steady in TO, and a $2 mill a pop, well, that’s not too bad a hit considering his pk ability, and his knack for making the transition for rookie Dmen easier.

Pittsburgh still has a relatively young D corps there, Hal’s game will play well there.

There is no way Hossa will be re-signed after this year.  They’re just making a run for it this year.
