Give Therrien Some Credit

From Mike Brophy at The Hockey News,
As I was saying, the Penguins are built on a foundation of young studs, the likes of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Jordan Staal and Marc-Andre Fleury. That is the core of a team destined to get back to the Stanley Cup final before too long – as long as they continue to be coached by Therrien.
It’s not as though he’s the only man who can guide this club, but give credit where credit is due. Does anybody out there believe the Penguins would have managed to steal two games off the powerful Detroit Red Wings in the final if not for the defensive teachings of the guy they call Mike?

Does anyone honestly believe they can go over the top with this guy? I just don’t see it. There are so many coaches that have proven their worth as being higher than Michelle’s.

No Crosby on the PK = dumb coaching. There’s no way to sugarcoat that.
Leaving Malkin on the point for an entire power play ain’t too bright either.

A Penguins fan commented that Crosby doesn’t kill penalties because once he broke his foot blocking a shot, and Therrien didn’t want to risk that again.
Still stupid, but at least it has an iota of logic to it (if you assume that he would never break a foot any other way in the game).

also, Therrien’s time out before the 5-on-3 was about the worst coaching decision I’ve seen in hockey. sure, give the Wings best penalty killers time to rest, after they had JUST finished a shift...instead of getting the 5-on-3 against the second PK unit or a tired first unit. what part of a 5-on-3 do you need to call a timeout to PLAN?!

C’mon. Really? Marc Crawford could have gotten to the SCF with that roster and that slate of opponents in the playoffs… MIKE MILBURY could have.. BARRY MELROSE could have…
So no, no credit given, thanks.

Therrien could ensure Crosby never, ever gets hurt by just keeping him on the bench.
Wait, we learned with Jiri Fischer that that won’t work, either. Damn! There must be some way…

I’m a Wings’ fan respectful of the Penguins young talent hoping that Therrien remains coaching the team, in the same respect that as a Michigan fan I’ll forever lament John Cooper’s departure from OSU.
