GM’s Don’t Want to Add a Penalty for Head Shots

From Darren Dreger at TSN:

National Hockey League general managers are not interested in a penalty for head checking.

The topic was discussed again today in Pittsburgh and the majority of the leagues 30 gm’s agreed there is no reason to change or add to the rule book.

I betcha one of those dissenting minority GMs is Holland who wants ALL players protected from head shots.

Yeah the GMs who ice a team of dumb bricks and don’t care about their players’ well being, and certainly not others’ players could care less about head shots.

I think the GMs are wondering why they should add more rules when the NHL can’t even consistently enforce the ones they have now.

Well, the problem with that is that this would eliminate big hits for the fear of hitting the head.

This is a very good point.  I guess I can see the big sticking point simply being “we don’t want any more rules right now”.  Also, I’m very curious to see which GMs they are that dissented.  Most teams still carry those enforcer types who are worth almost nothing except for hard hitting and fighting, and I bet it’s the select few GMs that create teams based around skill instead that wanted the rule.

I, for one, have come to hate headshots after all of the research regarding head injuries has come out in the last few years, showing significant decreases in a person’s health due to many minor head injuries over the course of several years.  I cannot simply ignore that fact for my own “entertainment” in a game, and would love to see headshots taken out of the game.

And there’s the problem. I’m not a big fan of an automatic penalty to any hit to the head. Sometimes things happen without intent and due to random occurrences that really aren’t anyone’s fault.

But if the league can’t or wont hand out acceptable and consistent “supplementary discipline” then something needs to be in place for in-game penalties to help protect players.

So, I guess this means that Kronwall gets to keep his job.
