Go For The Win

from Gary Thorne at USA TODAY,
One of the obvious results of the shootout in the game is that at this point of the season, teams in the running are looking for that one point first and then hoping to get the bonus in overtime or in the shootout.
There is a danger in that mentality for the game.
Third periods should be all-out attempts to win close games, not attempts not to lose. The pressure is there for teams that need points to shut down the offense in tied third periods, especially if they have the personnel to win the shootout.

Or, to make a win really worth it, skip OT and the shootout entirely and award:
0 points for a loss
1 point for a tie
3 points for a win
Save the overtime periods for the playoffs.
If you invent a “loser point” out of thin air, why not invent an extra point to go to the team that wins in regulation? It makes just as much sense as rewarding a runner-up to the winning team.

Kukla’s Korner is always a free service for readers, but it costs some money to maintain. If you’re ever in a position to donate a few dollars to help out, we’d be very appreciative.

The solution is simple:
Award no points for a tie, extend the OT to 10 minutes, if it ends in a tie, both teams lose.
Send Bettman back to the NBA and insist he take his precious shootout with him.
