Good And Bad Acquisitions

from Mike Brophy of Sportsnet,

Here are 10 players who joined new teams last summer that are paying dividends, and a few who have missed the mark.

THE GOOD:

Marian Gaborik, New York Rangers.

Many wondered if the Rangers made a mistake signing a player with a history of injuries to a long, rich contract, but Gaborik has been gold for the Blueshirts….

THE BAD:

Martin Havlat, Minnesota Wild

Brought in to replace Gaborik, Havlat has been a disappointment with just 15 goals in 61 games. This guy can be a human highlight film when he is on his game, but that has not been the case very often this season.

Think Brophy missed not identifying Craig Anderson as a part of The Good.  Guy has delivered beyond expectation at an amazing cap-friendly cost.

And I will disagree with his sentiments that Emery didn’t establish himself as a bona fide No. 1.  While he only played the first two months of the season, his numbers were top ten in nearly all categories and were among the best for Canadian born netminders.  As his injuries really limited his time on the ice, I don’t think you can make and argument for or against the signing.  It didn’t cost the Flyers much as he’s been on LTIR most of the year…

The Bad

The San Jose Sharks trading for Nicklas Wallin and Signing 3 time waived D Jay Leach.

As this is a team that preports to be a stanley cup contending team.

The article does name Craig Anderson among “The Good”.

Isn’t the “GOODEST” acquistion Michael Leighton?  Guy is costing Holmgren a total of $190K for the year and look at his numbers since arriving:

16-5 with a 2.42 GAA and a .921 SVP.

The Flyers stink at finding a gamer in net.  While the jury is still out on this guy (understatement of the year), one can’t argue with his current numbers.  But, rookie hotshots have the same issue…

While I initially thought that replacing Lemelin with Reese was a mistake, clearly Reese and Leighton speak the same language.  Leighton has performed exceedingly better than anyone anywhere would have ever anticipated.
