Good Hits Means Here Comes A Fight

from Ken Campbell of the Hockey News,

Those who often lament the NHL becoming the “No Hitting League” – hey, I don’t see it either – should take guys like Rene Bourque and Alexandre Picard and slap them upside the head.

This is getting ridiculous. How do you expect to have hitting in the game when the player delivering a clean hit has to worry about being jumped and pummeled by some idiot who is hell-bent on revenge? No matter what you think about fighting in hockey, the increasing number of fights that come on the heels of clean hits are ridiculous.

100% agree. Taking a run at someone is one thing. A good clean hit, even if the guy has his head down, is not something that demands retribution in the form of a knuckle sandwchich.

This is a pretty big issue in hockey.  Because if you start handing out instigators for fights after hits, then players will be less inclined to stand up for their team mates.  I say, if a player is willing to fight, you mine as well let him.  But there’s problems when a guy like Derek Boogard starts telling the opposition team when players can and can’t hit people
