Ha!

from TSN,

Pierre McGuire was asked what he would want in return for Sundin, assuming he would agree to waive his no-trade clause.

“I want to get the best possible assets in exchange for Sundin,” McGuire said, and then he listed some “fantasyland” scenarios he would chase.

“From the Detroit Red Wings I want Niklas Kronwall, a shut-down defenceman, and a first round pick.

“If I’m dealing with the San Jose Sharks, I want Milan Michalek and a first round pick.

“If I’m dealing with Vancouver then I want Ryan Kesler, a great two-way centreman, and a first round pick.”

more...Wanting and getting are two different things.

Why even mention San Jose? Do they really need Sundin, Thornton and Marleau? You may as well put Dallas on the list as well if you are looking for a team with a need for a center and ability to go further than expected in the playoffs.

But Bob McKenzie weighed in with actual analysis, not just inane ramblings like McGuire:

“I think you are more likely to get quantity as opposed to that kind of quality,” McKenzie said. “Instead of getting a stud player like Michalek or Kronwall and a first rounder, you are more likely to get the Peter Forsberg package that Philadelphia got last year. The Flyers got Scottie Upshall, a serviceable and decent NHL player, a good prospect in Ryan Parent, plus a couple of significant draft picks.”

The Sundin to San Jose thing comes up because the team is so young (need for veteran experience for the playoffs so they won’t fold again) and they have enough cap space to fit him because they have so many cheap young players, I think.

I’d like to have my paycheck doubled, better benefits, and only have to work 25 hour weeks, but I don’t see that happening, either.

Man, the comments on that article sound like they’re from a different planet…one where salary caps don’t exist and Darcy Tucker is on every team’s wish list.

The sad thing is, some of those mouth-breathers could probably match JFJ’s woeful performance.

NHL GMs just haven’t adjusted to reality yet.

They’re still making these stupid Forsberg, Tkachuk, Guerin type trades which end up having minimal positive impact on the team while costing tons of picks and players.

Unfortunately, the same five or six idiot GMs are going to continue to propogate this kind of stupidity because they’ll be the same fringe teams every year… in large part due to their atrocious asset management.

And then, since they’ll always be at least one or two of these dimwits in the trading pool every year, the ‘trade market’ will always be inflated because one of those goofballs will make some ‘Aging Vet for 2 #1’s and a roster player’ move early on that the other GMs will think they have to match in order to not look like they’re getting a bad deal.

A smart GM wouldn’t move a player similar to Kronwall who locked up long term like he is for Sundin straight up, much less as part of some cockamamie package… but since the aforementioned mental midgets in GM offices across the country have graced us with this recent history of horribly ludicrous trades… c’est la vie.

This is why there are no real trades made anymore.  The stupid GMs can only be as stupid as their cap allows them to be, and since they’ve already likely made about a half dozen stupid personnel moves in the UFA period they don’t have the cash to make any more stupid moves at the deadline.  The smart ones stay the heck away from the whole mess and just look at depth guys at the deadline, not stars.

The Forsberg scenario is most likely.  4 assets.  Anything less than 4 assets for Sundin is an insult.
