Hands Off

from Dan Wood of Ducks Blog,

“The new rules are going to be even more stringent on defending in the defensive zone,” Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said Sunday after the club completed its second day of training camp. “Anything with the free hand — before, players were allowed to put that stick in there. Any type of movement with that stick and arm to stop progression of a player, they’re going to be very, very strict on it.

“They don’t want that ability to pin (along the boards), and hold people on the wall. They want that freedom. There will be very little pinning. There will be free hands, but there won’t be grappling.”

As opposed to favoring speed-type players, the rules interpretation might give more freedom for bigger, stronger players to work their magic in the corners and behind the net.

I kind of understand why he suggested a no-grappling rule like that would help bigger players, but I don’t think that’s true.  If being able to bearhug the other guy aganist the wall isn’t an advantage for bigger and stronger players, I don’t know what is.  Big players will be a lot harder to control in the corners, especially if you don’t have a big defenceman to hit them off the puck, but I think fast (agile) players will gain relatively more of an advantage.  Georges Laraques only offensive option will still be to back up off the boards and push everything with him, but the Sedins cycle will be that much harder to slow down.

I like the greater flow of the game now, but this hardline approach––if consistent––will be rough to watch in the first month or so. The penalties will be really chinsey…like you’re watching the NBA or something. Thanks Gary. Ass.

There will be a lot more bigger hits along the boards while players try to neutralize opponents by either stunning them or knocking them down. Great, more boarding calls.

So, it’s no touching unless you use a lot of force?

That sounds a bit on the stupid side.  Also unwatchable.
