Hard To Move High Priced Players

from Spector’s Blog at Fox Sports,
The NHL’s salary cap for next season is expected to remain close to last season’s cap limit of $56.7 million, which could seriously handicap the off-season plans of several clubs that have already committed a lot of coin toward next season’s payroll.
Speculation suggests the following teams could attempt to move some high-salaried players to free up that valuable cap space:
-The Philadelphia Flyers are currently sitting just under $50 million for next season and are rumored shopping Daniel Briere, who has a no-movement clause, an injury history, and a cap hit of $6.5 million per season until the end of the 2014-15 season.
-The Chicago Blackhawks have been rumored (mainly coming from rumor blogs so take with a grain of salt) to be unhappy with defenseman Brian Campbell’s performance and would like to move him, his limited no-trade clause and his $7.145 million per season until 2015-16 off their books.

Mac, it’s funny because I was just coming to post regarding Buffalo. I was one of those that excoriated them for failing to sign any of the Briere, Drury and Campbell trio. However, given that all of those players’ new teams are unhappy with the terms they’re signed to and trying to move them (although those terms make them difficult), how much trouble would Buffalo be in had they capitulated and overpaid for any of them? True, they didn’t necessarily have to pay the full market rate had they started negotiations earlier, and their failure to deal early is solely their own fault. But at some point we also have to realize that these players have agents whose job it is to get them as much money as possible, so why not try to win the brass ring in free agency, especially given the absurd money thrown around the last three summers.

I was half sarcastic in saying that….however, it wouldn’t surprise me if the Sabres considered Briere. His deal is a little more friendly than Campbell’s and isn’t as long. Campbell, on the other hand, would be very hard to move this summer!

Does the analysis consist of something other than, “they make way too much money compared to their talent?”
