Hartford Mayor Talks NHL Franchise With Bettman

via WTIC Radio,

Hartford Mayor Eddie Perez is continuing to push for a National Hockey League team in Hartford. Today he updated NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman on the status of the city’s plans for a new arena and the continuing interest in a future NHL franchise.

Perez says, for his part, Bettman shared his thoughts on what would be needed for an NHL team to succeed. He says both sides agreed they should continue their talks.

added 4:58pm, from WTNH,

Perez goes on to state how he plans to keep the momentum going in Hartford?s renaissance. “We must be prepared in the next three to five years to implement a redevelopment plan for a new multi-use arena facility that serves the entire state not only as a world class venue for concerts, family shows and UCONN Basketball, but also as a potential home for a major league sports franchise,” Mayor Perez said. “In light of these difficult financial times, this effort will take a considerable amount of work and partnership between the city, state and corporate community to bring the plans for the development of a new facility to reality, but the benefits have the potential to be exponential.”

If Hartford lands one, congrats but man, that completely screws over Detroit’s chance to return to the Eastern Conference.

Agreed.  If DET want’s in the East, they need more teams in the west.

Could Hartford provide a home for a relocating team perhaps?  FLA, TB, ATL, NYI are all eastern teams that could be ready to move in 3-5 years (if not now).

I am sure Gary’s plan was to go to 32 teams, nice number - but not enough markets.  Perhaps moving back to 28 is a better idea.  That would make it hard for places like Hartford and/or Winnipeg to get teams back.

If Hartford wants an NHL team, maybe they might show some interest by attending some Wolfpack games, where they probably average 2,000 a game, if that. If you love hockey, you’re gonna be where ever the game is. They don’t support the Pack. They don’t deserve an NHL team.

Although the Wings should be in the East, I don’t see the NHL leaving just one Original 6 team out West!  Bring back the Whale!!
