Wings will announce shortly that Dominik Hasek will be joining the team for the upcoming season.
added 12:19pm, added a poll in the KKF on this subject.
update on the tele-conference that took place at 1pm, Both Holland and Hasek were available on different phone lines. Holland: In early July he called Hasek’s agent to see if Dom had interest in the Wings. He had numerous conversations with Rich Winter, Hasek’s agent and was excited about the possibility to have Dom back. Holland knows his groin is an issue. Very low based salary, playoff incentive for Dom. Looks at Osgood and Hasek as 1a and 1b.
Hasek: He could not believe the Wings called him. He knew right away this was a wonderful opportunity for him. Discussed it with his family and got back to Holland after 10 days. He is looking at this as a one-year deal. Very excited, looking forward to helping the Wings win the cup.
Holland was asked about the cap, Wings are about 4-5 million below the cap. Want to sign Franzen and add another forward. Wants some $$$ available at the trade deadline.
note: this is a raw feed so please excuse any typing errors.
more...Hasek was asked about his groin now. Says he feels great, has been playing many sports and is losing a little weight to help with any groin issues. His goal is to be healthy for the season and the playoffs.
even more...Dom said he doesn’t care if he plays 40 to 50 games this season. He wants to be healthy for the playoffs. Hasek mentioned his family will come to Detroit after Xmas and stay with him there.
one more update...Holland was asked about Belfour. Holland said the team doctors said his back was fine but there would always be a concern about it. Holland said he became more and more convinced that Dom was the way to go and stated before the Olympics, Hasek was the Vezina winning goalie in the NHL.
That’s it for me folks...now get back to work…
update 2:09pm, from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,
Dominik Hasek is returning for a third tour of duty with the Detroit Red Wings.
The team announced Monday it has signed the 41-year-old to a one-year deal, believed to be worth about $500,000 plus incentives.

Not a bad signing if the money is right. With incentives, shouldn’t be more than $1M cap hit/yr. Anything more is too risky.

[Hasek accent] Well, you know, I believe that this signing could work, you know, but if his groin is iffy, which it is, I don’t nkow, it may not be the best idea.. [/Hasek accent]
Oy. I hope the third time’s the charm.

WHOA, out of left field. I knew they were negotiating, and thought it was a good idea (because I don’t blame Dom for anything that happened in Ottawa), but I thought there was too much bad taste after what happened when they had the 3 goalie fiasco + what happened in Ottawa.

Paul, The only really bad thing you can say about Hasek thats fair (i.e. doesn’t have some stupid media slant on it), is that he should have requested to be traded or asked for a promise that there wouldn’t be a 3-goalie situation.

I saw this post in my bloglines and immediately thought, “Is this a joke? Please tell me this isn’t KK, but a different blog. Ahhh!”

Just tell me that this is a package deal, with Rich Winter adding Sykora to the mix…

Is there still room on the Let’s Bash Holland bandwagon??
Posted by that_guy on 07/31/06 at 11:35 AM ET
I see...desperate phone calls coming out of Ken Holland’s office...around December...something about “torn groins and shattered egos and HELP!”
Doug Wilson (Toskala/Nabokov), Darcy Regier (Biron), and Brian Burke (Giguere) must be licking their chops waiting for this to blow up.

*does a Muttley laugh*
If this is not proof of the adage, “Old habits die hard.”, I truly don’t know what is.
Unless Hasek miraculously has a good season, I think the Wings’ penchant for signing older/supposedly past their prime players is going to finally bite them in the butt.

I thought the Wings has more cap room than that.

Great job, Paul.
TG: I think that Holland’s betting on Bootland, Kopecky, and Hudler making the roster. I thought they had more cap room as well, and it’s very possible that when he said he has $4-5 million left, he was including any potential bonuses that Hasek may earn.
I still don’t understand why he wouldn’t go after Biron or Giguere, but I do hope that Dom does well.

Let’s be somewhat fair.
1. This is better than Belfour. For both on the ice and in the locker room. As crazy as that last part sounds.
2. I don’t think Hasek needs a “miracle” to be very good this season. He needs to split time with Osgood. He showed last year that he is still an outstanding goalie. The negative is that he’s shown he can’t play a 60+ game regular season.

Holland is right… before the Olypic fiasco, everyone was raving how awesome Hasek was doing. With a regular season( no Olympics) and as long as Hasek realizes that he needs a lot of rest to stay healthy, and Osgood being the great man that he is for putting up with all of this, then I think the Wings will be in great shape. Well except they need a 30 goal scorer.
