From TSN:
Detroit Red Wings goaltender Dominik Hasek officially announced his retirement from the National Hockey League after 16 seasons.
Hasek leaves the NHL as one of the most important goaltenders the game has ever seen. From 1993 to 2001, The Dominator won six Vezina Trophies and became the first goalie since Jacques Plante (1962) to be named the league’s Most Valuable Player. Hasek was also the first goalie ever to win consecutive Hart Trophies in 1997 and 1998.
Update 11:30am ET: Noted in the Free Press, “It’s time to say goodbye,” Hasek said.
Update 2:42pm ET: Some reflections on Hasek from Mitch Albom at the Free Press. Meanwhile, HockeyTownTodd has already moved on to Jimmy Howard…
Update 3:10pm ET: Video from Hasek’s press conference now added below.
Update 6:34pm ET: From Pierre LeBrun at the CP, Brodeur, Peca and Ruff remember Hasek as one of the best.
For more on Hasek, check out this retrospective from Mike Wilkinson at the Detroit News.

It’s been fun seeing you in the crease, making those great saves, Hasek. You’re a stand up, classy guy, and I wish you the best in everything you do in life after being a hockey player.

Congratulations for a great career, the Cups of course, and, not wigging out when you finally became a true team player.
And of course, WOO-HOO!
Once again, thanks for the good memories.
“Dominator.”
Respectfully, Kate Wright
Lets Go Red Wings!!!!!

Somewhere in Slovakia, Marion Gaborik is breathing a low sigh of relief right now…

I’m really going to miss watching him run folks like Gaborik when they have a breakaway with their heads down. He made games really fun to watch.

Dom, best of luck. Ironically we’ll also remember you for what you did off the ice, which was be a stand up team guy in the locker room while watching another man step into your place and bring home the Cup.
What a stonewalling wizard, hard to find goalies like him anymore who rely so much on instinct more than form and pre-scripted training.

Hasek, in his prime, was simply the best goalie of my time. Those Sabre teams he led were simply BAD most of the time. And yet he carried them. Every single time. New fans don’t realize how dominant he wa sin Buffalo.
But it was time, Dom. Maybe a year or two past time. Thanks for your time in DET, and enjoy retirement. Just stay out of roller hockey fights, ‘kay?

So long, Dom. Thanks for winning the cup in ‘02 and for not getting huffy when Ozzie won the cup this year!
