He Didn’t Call “Net”

via Sports Network,
The Sharks took a 3-1 lead on an odd goal. Craig Rivet blasted a shot from the high slot that hit a stick in front, went over the net and appeared to hit the mesh on top of the boards, which would have whistled the play dead. The puck went to the low right side where Setoguchi knocked it in with 10:43 to play. Since a goal can’t be reviewed for a dead puck, the score was allowed to stand.
Wings lose the game 3-2. I was at the game and saw the play. When the puck hit the netting behind the goal, I basically relaxed, expecting a whistle and a face-off. Tthe next thing you know, the puck is in the net and the Sharks are celebrating a goal.
On-ice officials missed it, plain and simple, nothing you can do but move on to the next game…
Video adde 3/1/08…
Near the end of the video, you will see the puck land at the right side of the net…

The Sharks score a goal on a rebound off the net. The Wings miss a goal when Hank’s shot caroms off the shaft of the defender’s stick. It would be laughable if all of this hadn’t been going on for a freaking month now.
On a positive note, Stuart looked very good. At first I didn’t think pairing him with Kronwall was a good idea, but maybe now Nick Jr. can concentrate on scoring and leave the heavy hitting to Stuart.
And how about that Sammy, huh? Boy is he a stud. Right. Even a blind squirrel…

Maybe the whistle should have been blown, I was watching on TV so I couldn’t see clearly. However, the mistake of the refs made is small in comparison to the player’s mistakes, the whistle wasn’t blown, and a professional hockey player should know that you play till the whistle blows, and none of the Detroit players seemed to do that.

I hate the Wings, but that sucks. Any play that results in a goal should be reviewable.

It sux for wings fans, but the fact is this is no different than a miscalled penalty that results in a goal *cough* the wings second goal. So, crap happens the end.

Actually, it’s completely different than a miscalled penalty. The calling of a penalty has some room to be subjective—the calling of a dead puck does not.
I don’t blame the players, either. Crappy break, but what can you do?
The shame in it all is that while the Wings played a mediocre game, the sure didn’t play poor enough to deserve a loss. It happens. If it comes down to a two point difference, then we can complain, but for now they are just playing bad, so who cares.

That’s one of those moments that really gets your goat… seems to happen on a fairly regular basis. Since the NHL has adopted the NFL’s “parity,” it clearly seems time to adopt the challenge flag system, as well.
In an era when a playoff spot can be determined by a shootout, such as it was in the East last year, then a lost point or two by a flubbed call is no longer acceptable.
