He Is An MSMer & Likes Blogs Too

I had the opportunity of meeting Elliotte Friedman during the SCF in Detroit and enjoyed the brief time we actually were able to talk.  We would pass each other in the aisles at ‘The Joe’ and give each other a nod as we headed in different directions.

A good guy, just like most of us, but he gets to interview the stars of the game, a job most of us would love to have.

He has earned his position at HNIC and I am sure is in the long range plans for CBC and HNIC.

Today, Elliotte wrote a piece for Puck Daddy on hockey bloggers and if you are interested in that topic, I suggest you give it a read.

added 8:16pm, Adam Proteau of the Hockey News chimes in…

So long as writers are accountable – i.e., prepared to defend their positions to the people or organizations they’re writing about – they ought to be allowed to build that buzz, in any way they see fit. And if I were overseeing the velvet rope separating the wheat from the chaff in the press box, I’d rather have 100 passionate writers in there creating a negative buzz than a single wire-service reporter writing a neat, non-critical game story.

more and thanks to a KK reader for the pointer… I missed that one completely, sorry Adam!

Bit by bit, the story keeps bouncing around, and eyes are certainly reading with interest. It’s nice again to see some MSM support for the ASM (Alternative Stream Media, I keep trying to find a way to express my view of what I would like to be considered, somewhere between MSM and blogger). It is important to remember that not all bloggers would think of asking for a press pass, or would want any official link between themselves and the team(s) they cover. I find myself wondering how much of a crossover there is between the unacceptable content that teams oppose, and the members of the ASM asking for media credentials. Considering Elliot seems to agree that accountability and defensible work as the main sticking points, I keep wondering if we might someday see the emergence of a way to effectively credential those who, while without a MSM job, still provide thought-provoking, insightful, and defensible contributions to the sport.

Much of the focus has been on the blogging part of the story.  It would be nice to focus the Oilers and the NHL on how to keep from this happening again.  What company out there hires a person, gives the new hire a big binder of policies, and tells that person to memorize and know every rule and regulation in the binder?  Most companies are smart enough to have an orientation to make sure each new hire knows the rules.  Sounds like that is exactly what happened in Washington with the Capitals and Eric McErlain.  Maybe this should be a topic at the upcoming GM meeting.

Another set of comments seems to be that there are bloggers who don’t deserve press credentials.  That holds true for MSM as well as bloggers.  Teams can do due diligence on a blogger just like they would for Gus from the Dog River Howler.  There are some great blogs across the continent and it’s not too hard to see who are legitimate and held in esteem by their peers.

As disturbing as this story has been, it was be more sad and disturbing if the NHL and the 30 teams didn’t learn a lesson from this as well as bloggers who are handed a press pass.
