Healy Defends His Credibility

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,

Healy, a former NHL goaltender and broadcast analyst who joined the NHLPA under Kelly 14 months ago, was especially critical of an internal office review that he said attacked his credibility.

The woman who conducted the review, Anne Marie Turnbull, accused Healy of misleading players regarding the role of former superstars Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux in previous union matters, Healy said.

“I would never and have not misled or told any untruths to any player. I can not [sic] sit back and continue to perform my duties when my Players’ Association co-workers unjustifiably impugn my credibility in front of the players I represent and fire shots against Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux, two of the greatest players in the game, who have benefited every player in this Players’ Association,” Healy wrote in a letter to the members of the NHLPA executive board, which was obtained by ESPN.com.

I’ve been reading the flurry of articles over the last few days and feeling like I must be missing some large aspect of the story. This putsch can’t just be due to the fact that a few people (ex-ombudsman Eric Lindros, for example) were disgruntled, can it?

What’s the endgame here? Is there a faction within the NHLPA that’s determined to go balls to the walls in negotiations with the league and thought that Kelly wasn’t aggressive enough in that respect? If these guys are more concerned with acting tough and threatening to strike again than working on actually solving differences, perhaps they should take a look at the North American economies and rethink things. I don’t think the league can recover from another strike.

If this keeps up the NHL should make the lead on ESPN’s SportsCenter.

Eh, I doubt it. I’m sure there’s some important Brett Farve info for them to talk about instead. Don’t forget Curt Schilling wanting to become a senator, now that is some important sports news there.

Possibility of the NHLPA falling into pieces and causing another NHL lockout when this CBA is up? No one cares.
