Helpful Hints For Bettman

from Mike Brophy of the Hockey News,

I am worried for Bettman’s future. My understanding is he didn’t have the full support of the owners prior to the lockout, but he bought himself some more time by kicking the players’ butts in collective bargaining agreement negotiations.

Now, with the Nashville ownership fiasco unfolding, I think Bettman’s support of William Del Biaggio and his shady dealings concerning Canadian bazillionaire Jim Balsillie could be the beginning of the end for the commish. They provide jumping-off points for anybody hoping to see him take a hike.

But I hope things don’t unfold like that.

So what can Bettman do to get back into people’s good books? Well, if I am his P.R. guy, I say:

• Do away with this phrase: In keeping with club policy, terms of the agreement will not be made public. Gary, tell your dopey GMs we live in a salary cap world and contract information must be made public.

I don’t think hockey fans would be happy with Ghandi if he ran the league.

Well, duh. Ghandi would be as unqualified as Butthead to run the league.

...he bought himself some more time by kicking the players’ butts in collective bargaining agreement negotiations.

Really? Is that how things have turned out? I think if you asked the players today, they’d say they like the results of that agreement just fine, thank you.

But as for Brophy’s main points, I absolutely agree on all four of them, especially the first one. It always makes me laugh to see that “In keeping with club policy…” statement. Within an hour of that announcement, you can go to nhlnumbers.com and see exactly what the terms of the deal are. grin

They might be decent suggestions for hockey, but I don’t think any of them really are suggestions for Bettman, nor are they really solutions to help Gary keep his job.

I mean, are people really thinking that Gary’s job would be safer if arena music wasn’t so loud?  Should I assume that Gary popularized the “per club policy” line?

In that sense it’s a misguided article: go ahead and change all four of those things, but I don’t think my opinion of Gary would change one bit.

Beat me to it.

Me, too.

Though I do agree with Brophy about the music.  I’m old, and I admit it, but I really don’t need the music at all.  Interesting stuff actually happens after a whistle.  Though I suppose a bit of the ancient/traditional organ music would be ok.

That is not to say I’m not a big AC/DC fan.  In fact, I’ve been lobbying my fiancee for a while to agree to this for my vows:

You are a fast machine,
You’ve kept your motor clean,
You are the best damn woman that I’ve ever seen…

So far she thinks that she should write the vows for both of us. smile

I say save the lyrics.  Wait until you are renewing your vows in 20 or 30 years, especially if there are children involved - then they can roll their eyes into the next decade at how strange their parents are.  smile

Marriage contracts should be a one year deal with a one year renewal option…No Trade clauses..optional.

Twenty or thirty years from now we’ll be in our mid-80s to mid-90s.  Neither of us may even remember who the other is, let alone the lyrics to one of our favorites that we loved to dance to 20 or 30 years prior.  smile

Make that mid-70s to mid-80s.  Apparently the dementia is starting already… wink
