from Sean Gordon, Allan Maki and David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail,
The grumbling is intensifying behind the scenes from owners and team officials who are watching with mounting dismay as millions pour from successful franchises in Canada and the United States to their staggering partners, mostly in the American sunbelt.
According to information compiled by The Globe and Mail from various sources, the six Canadian NHL franchises contributed more than $40-million (all figures U.S.) to their fellow owners last season, and about $50-million when playoff revenues are taken into account.

I especially like the last two sentence of said article about how the Canadian teams were struggling franchises but this issue didn’t pop up - of course, the NHL didn’t have this model in place then.
Everything is cyclic; it’s boom or bust, and someday, other teams will need the assistance that some teams are getting now.

Damn americans. its all their freaking faults. If their stupid fans weren’t so poor and their stupid economy didn’t blow so much and their stupid teams didn’t suck so much…. Oh wait, thats right a Canadian team hasn’t won a cup since what, 1993 or something?

Stay tuned for the follow-up article coming a few months down the road as the reversal of the Loonie’s fortunes against the US Dollar prompts the smaller Canadian teams to call for league assistance.
I think a major reason for the NHL’s weakness compared to the NFL, NBA and MLB is due more to the relationship between the owners than anything else. They act more like individual enterprises than a united league.
