Hey, No Cuts In Line

from Wes Gilbertson of Sun Media,

The Calgary Flames reportedly jumped the queue for H1N1 vaccinations, and that has some members of the Sea of Red seeing red.

The Flames received their shots Friday, one day before the province temporarily shut down clinics, saying they would eventually reopen but only be available to high-risk Albertans.

“I’m hearing from people,” said Flames CEO Ken King.

“I’m hearing from fans this morning and I intend to speak with them and try to help them understand why we would make a decision and what criteria under which we made that decision and again explain to them that we ... appreciate that not everyone will agree.”

Surprise, people with more money are treated differently than the rest of us in the middle class.

Actually, it does make sense - and not just that hockey players can’t call in sick for a week and stay home if they are ill.  With both their travels to other cities, and close contact with those who have travelled from other cities - not to mention unavoidably close contact with those who are known to be carrying the virus - a professional hockey player would be an excellent vector to carry the virus from one area (Edmonton, for example) to their families and who they have contact with, such as their kids’ classmates at school.

It’s important not just that vulnerable groups get vaccinations, but also those who could transmit the virus to those who are vulnerable.
