HHOF Worthy?

from Adrian Dater at Versus,
Therefore, with apologies again to some of those judged here not to be Hall-deserving, we bring you a determination of worthiness for 10 players. This is not a scientific process; some of the guys technically haven’t retired yet, or haven’t even become eligible for Hall consideration because they haven’t been retired a full three seasons - the usual criteria for induction, unless you’re somebody like Wayne Gretzky or Mario Lemieux and just go right to the head of the line….
Claude Lemieux - Oh boy. This could come down to the final petal on the flower.
He was never a truly great player in the regular season, but Lemieux was great many times in the biggest of hockey games. And it wasn’t just that he scored big goals at times and was fortunate to play on some teams with other truly great teammates. Thing is, Lemieux always seemed to be a presence in games that mattered most.
You just couldn’t ignore him. He was a guy that everybody in the building had something to say about. Yeah, he dove and embellished (Sports Illustrated writer Michael Farber had a memorable line once, that Lemieux played two positions, “right wing and prone”) and he took nights off sometimes in the regular season.
But people forget he did score 379 regular-season goals. Then, you factor in his 80 goals in 279 playoff games, four Stanley Cup rings with three teams and one Conn Smythe, and I have to give him the nod.
VOTE: Yes
more on nine other players…

Dater is full of shit. He lists Shanahan as on the bubble for the HHOF.
On the frickin’ bubble…

Wow.
First of all, Lemieux played in 234 playoff games, not 279, according to hockeydb.com.
Second of all, is 0.34 GPG in the playoffs HOF-worthy all by itself? 0.68 PPG is a little better, but again, HOF-worthy? He ranks 24th all time in playoff scoring. Pretty good… but he also ranks 4th in playoff games played.
Let’s consider another guy mentioned in the article—Brendan Shanahan. He had 60 goals in 184 playoff games, for 0.33 GPG—essentially the same as Lemieux. On the other hand, his PPG was 0.73.
Now, take into account that Shanahan has among the best regular season numbers in history, whereas Lemieux’s are certainly above average, but not “all-time” calibre.
If you still think Clode is HOF-worthy, consider this: Cliff Ronning had a slightly better PPG record in the playoffs than Lemieux and comparable regular season numbers. Ronning was stuck on mediocre teams for the majority of his career, limiting him to under 100 playoff games. You want to tell me the difference between a HOF player is the fortunate circumstance that the other 22 guys on his club’s roster were good enough to help him get into 150 more playoff games?

No friggin way that Turtle Lemieux should get honored in the Hall of Fame alongside hockey greats. I don’t mind the concept that an agitator could make the hall, but I don’t think a guy who consistently tried to hurt people like Claude did belongs. His career was a stain on the game of hockey.

Please go to the “No good goalies in the finals” or whatever the articles called. I put an cool study on there examining the effectiveness of goalies.

Lemiieux was on 4 Stanley Cup Winning Teams and was a key contributor on all 4. He has led the playoffs in goal scoring twice (‘95 and ‘97). He’s third all-time in game-winning goals in the SCP, not to mention 9th all-time in playoff goal-scoring. And he also won a Conn Smythe (‘95). Team Canada thought so highly of him that they even put him on their team for the ‘96 World Cup.
Sounds like a HOFer, but to me I know someone’s a HOFer as soon as I here his name, it’s instant. Like Gretzky-Orr-M. Lemieux-Yzerman. With C. Lemiuex it’s different because of all the controversies he;s been invovled in. I tend to think of a lot of those first. But, when you look at his career, especially as a playoff performer, and take emotion out of it ,he really does look like he belongs in the HOF. He’s definitely different.

QFT.
I am sure that Dater’s hard-on for the Avs has nothing to do with his sentiments regarding Claude.

Quoted form the article:
And yet, here is why I vote no on Brindy going to the HOF: if I’m going to vote ‘yes’, I need at least one great year. That doesn’t mean a guy needed to win the Hart Trophy or a Vezina or a scoring title. But I need at least one year where you say “OK, he was the best player on the ice more often than not. He was a GREAT player.” Brind’Amour was consistently good-to-very good for a long time.
He says no to Brind’amour because he never had a GREAT year, yet he’ll put Claude LeFraud in there in as heartbeat. Remind me of Claude’s GREAT year? Oh that’s right, he never had one. He arguably never even had a really good year.
At that point I clicked the little X, closed the window, and scolded myself for even opening the article.
Paul, please do everyone a favor refrain from linking to any more of Dater’s articles. You may as well link to Eklund if you’re goign to continue to link to the fraud from Colorado. Just because you can con Versus into posting your sh*t doesn’t mean you know a d*mn thing about hockey, or for that matter writing. Dater is the poster boy of this.

11th all time goal scorer, triple gold winner, 3 cups and Shanny is a bubble candidate after Lemieux? Dater really must want some hits. Lemieux might have the playoff stats to warrant consideration, but he’s seriously deficient in other areas, especially when compared to some most of the other candidates. And he’s one of the dirtiest player to play the game in the last 20 years and an unrepentant coward.
Team Canada thought so highly of him that they even put him on their team for the ‘96 World Cup.
-Lindas1st
They thought so highly of him that they put him on their nation team once during his ‘hall of fame’ career. Why, he’s got almost as many appearances as Kris Draper or Kirk Maltby, only without the gold and silver medals.

The only way Clod should be allowed in the HHoF is via paid admission, and no AAA discounts either!

Claude Lemieux to the HHOF gets a solid YES from me.

No you’re wrong, it was actually twice. He was also on Canada’s ‘87 Canada Cup team (which a certain Red Wing captain didn’t make). And unlike the WC where Canada handed out invitations to any player that wasn’t in the SCP, these were huge tournaments that Canada really wanted to win and show the world/USSR that they were the best hockey nation. So when Canada picked its teams, they picked players who they thought gave them the best chance to win. To make these teams was/is a really big deal. But I understand how some Red Wing fans feel about Lemieux. Oh yeah, he was also on Team NHL at Rendez Vouz ‘87. And BTW, I do believe Yzerman got jobbed in ‘87.

I got the national roster stuff from you, his wiki page
doesn’t list either

Yeah, he was on both teams, I even looked it up in Total Hockey. But I don’t think that fact will change your mind anyway. Agree to disagree.

So Cliff Ronning is a HOFer then, right?
Notice everyone ignored my argument against Clode, because it was emotionless so they couldn’t just dismiss it.

Channeling my inner Dater-
My HHOF list-
If you maybe sort of possibly once in my fantasies could have would have but didn’t but tried and probably did play for the Colorado Avalanche, you’re a shoe-in.
