HNIC May Shift Their Focus Away From Toronto

from Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun,

They are still the engine that drives the ratings for Hockey Night In Canada, no matter how ugly it gets on the ice.

But for how much longer will the Maple Leafs be foisted on the majority of the nation each Saturday night?

The deeper the struggling team’s slump gets and the greater the level of anger rises in Leafs Nation, the closer CBC executives will look at how many homes the team reaches on Canada’s most-watched weekly sports program.

Much like the team itself, the broadcaster realizes it’s too early to panic just three Saturday nights into the NHL season. It doesn’t hurt that the Leafs continue to draw big ratings and will continue to do so in the immediate future with all-Canadian matchups coming up.

This is something that really never gets discussed, mostly because the relevant hockey media that exists anymore is based in Canada, and the majority of them are in bed with Toronto anyway… but HNIC’s constant televising of Leafs games over other (much better) teams is essentially free advertising for the club.

It allows the Leafs to charge more for the on ice boarding ads, allows them to charge more for advertising in general, and allows them to drive up their revenue, all things which happen at the expense of the other Canadian clubs.

I am pretty interested to see if this shift away from the Leafs ever actually happens, because as the recent Phoenix Coyote court records illustrated pretty clearly, the Leafs hold a huge, huge amount of sway in the NHL.
