NEW YORK / TORONTO (November 17, 2009) – The National Hockey League® (NHL) and the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) together raised more than $650,000 in support of Hockey Fights Cancer and other cancer-related organizations during October’s Awareness Month.
More than half-a-million fans attended Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Nights that were hosted by each NHL club, helping to raise funds for local charities. Broadcasters also participated in the awareness nights through extensive coverage of the initiative. More than 11 million viewers tuned in and watched these telecasts through national and local television coverage, and streaming online via NHL GameCenter Live.
The NHL once again created commemorative Hockey Fights Cancer merchandise - including men’s ties and ladies’ scarves by Thomas Direct Sales, Inc., New Era ladies’ caps, Reebok men’s caps, NHL Dream Capsules, t-shirts by Old Time Sports, Inc., and Reflections 2009 - The NHL Hockey Year in Photographs. For the third consecutive year, the men’s Hockey Fights Cancer tie was the top selling item on Shop.NHL.com in October while the overall sale of Hockey Fights Cancer products online increased 42% over last year.
Reflections 2009 photo books signed by NHL team captains, a one-of-a-kind NHL Network goalie mask, Reebok caps and jerseys worn by the NHL’s elite during the 2009 NHL Player Media Tour this past September also were available for bidding through NHLPA.com and NHL.com. These auctions generated more than $18,000 for the charity.
