Hockey Has Lost Its Place

Eric at Off Wing Opinion pointed his readers to Tony Kornheiser of the Washington Post,

Hockey is dead.
At least it’s dead right here, right now.
Hockey is so dead in America, the players may as well still be locked out. You can’t find hockey anywhere on television unless you’re looking for the Bicycle Race network.

there’s a shock, another ESPN employee bashing the NHL because well, it’s not on ESPN. I’m also sick of these “hockey is dead” articles by people in the media that knew nothing about hockey to begin with. How would Kornheiser know it was dead if he’s never covered it or been in touch with it’s fanbase??
Someone tell Kornheiser to stick to getting ready to ruin Monday Night Football.

Tony, stay away from our game.  We don’t need you, stick to another sport.
Writers like you continue to amaze me, do you realize how stupid you sound by writing something like this?

Tony, if you read this, how many NHL games have you attended this year?

Look, these columns are written because they are easy to write. That being said, he does have a bit of a point. Sure, hockey is alive and well to hard core hockey fans like ourselves. We are thrilled with the new game, new rules and new rosters for the most part. But the casual fan that the league wants so desperately to attract has never been further away than they are right now. Between the lockout and the misguided removal of games from ESPN properties, hockey has moved far from the “public eye”. And I think that’s the point he is trying to make.

Mr. K has attended one home game at the Caps arena this year.  He claims the game is no longer hockey.
He has made this known in the D.C. area, and most of the casual fans here believe him.
Why he doesn’t see the greatness in Ovechkin is beyond me.

Another reason why hockey doesn’t belong in cities that don’t support their team.
If a player like Alex, many citiies in Canada would be selling out on a nightly basis.
Why keep the team there when no one watches them play?
