Hockey Hot In Pittsburgh

from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,
“I travel all over the league, and everybody talks about Detroit as ‘Hockeytown’ - and deservedly so, because of its tradition - but the noise levels in Pittsburgh, Minnesota, New York and Buffalo are just as good,” said McGuire, a former Penguins scout who coached the Hartford Whalers.
“Pittsburgh now, because of its young talent and rabid fan base cultivated by the organization, is tremendous. It’s awesome to be around a passionate fan base. Hockey’s not a photo op for these people. These are people investing in the product. It’s easy to be involved with a winner, but this team is poised to win for a long time.”

Its easy to be passionate when you don’t have to pay. See what happens to this new ‘diehard’ fan base when ticket prices jump up to pay for all of the salaries, the new arena and the owners’ greed. If Pittsburgh had kept ticket costs up and not given them away for $10 then the building would still be empty. We’ll see how ‘rabid’ these fans are when prices start meeting those in New York or Toronto ...

having not make the playoffs for 4+ years and getting handed the #1 pick twice by league does help your team doesnt it?
Pittsburgh isnt a hockey town, its a football town just like philadelphia. the only difference is that philadelphia fan base sticks with the team if they are horrible. Pittsburgh is acting like buffalo, they are catching on since they are good.
i question the figure the author’s attendence referenced. espn.com has a noted history of having the wrong number all the time.
can anyone tell me when a city has their professional and minor league hockey team in the playoffs at the same time like Philadelphia has right now.

You better be careful there FF, someone might point out there were two minor league teams in Fhilly last year.

...year after year of losing and high draft choices until finally their high picks are in years when even Matt Millen could have gotten it right.
That’s only because there are no wide receivers in hockey! ![]()
Still, I wonder how long the team will be able to stay together with the restraints of the salary cap. It looks like teams are going to have to win quickly with young talent before it gets expensive, since they won’t be able to afford all the best players they develop but will need to let them go for financial reasons. The decisions on who to keep and who to let go are going to be pretty important.

I have to give the Penguins credit for building a franchise the right way - year after year of losing and high draft choices until finally their high picks are in years when even Matt Millen could have gotten it right.
Definately a template for how to succeed in the new NHL.
