Hockey Notes On The Last Sunday In August

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,

• Strange stuff: Steve Yzerman never made the cover of Sports Illustrated, but his teammate, Kirk Maltby, did.

• If the Ilya Kovalchuk saga is, in fact, coming to a conclusion, it means the New Jersey Devils are $3 million US over the salary cap and have just more than a month to get their financial business in shape. Also over the cap: Vancouver, Boston and Calgary.

• Can’t you just feel that Maple Leafs excitement building: Matt Lashoff on Friday. Clarke MacArthur on Saturday. What’s next? Wayne Primeau resigning?

a few more hockey notes tossed in with other sports talk…

Perhaps he should reword that statement to qualify it as “while Yzerman was still playing in the NHL”.

He actually makes a very valid point regarding SI covers.
SI doesn’t tend to put star NHL players on the cover, instead the put the best “shot”, regardless of who is in it.  And generally, the NHL covers have all been action shots….  very rarely does SI ever do a posed cover invol;ving the NHL.

Naturally, SI doesn’t approach it this way with any other sport, because they actually know something about it and who the star players are…

I bet Yzerman couldn’t care less.
