from John Shannon of Sportsnet,
Please note, this is not about hockey in Canada. But that is not to say that we can’t learn any lessons from our friends down south…
Well, hockey season has finally started!
You read it right. For most NHL cities, particularly those south of the border, fans will start to gravitate towards the local arena and pay much more attention to the local team. There are lots of reasons for the season starting now. Firstly, for the most part, college and high school football are over. Secondly, the NFL season is winding down, and most of the playoff races are close to being settled. Thirdly, winter just started on December 21st, and hockey is a winter sport. Fourthly, NBC’s coverage in the US, will help raise the game’s profile. And finally, there is quite simply some pretty good hockey being played.
continued and John, what is that game you call football? Here in Detroit, football is non-existent.

If you are a hockey fan then you are a hockey fan and you will watch the games no matter what. I see the point that if someone likes Football better than Hockey they would pick a Football game over Hockey.

Bleargh. I hate the implication that hockey fans are also football fans in many cases, so they don’t pay attention until now. I HATE football - even real football, as I have heard is played in Indianapolis and cities other than Detroit. Can’t stand it at all.
And I wonder how many casual sports fans see the commercials for the outdoor game, have their curiosity piqued, and tune in to the game ... and then watch other regular indoor hockey games for the rest of the season. I know it’s a popular event, but I wonder how much of the interest is sustained.
