Hockey Ratings In Canada Way Down

from Chris Zelkovich of the Toronto Star,
National ratings for CBC and TSN show a significant decline from last season, the first after the NHL lost an entire season to a labour dispute.
And while the league has been touting the attractiveness of the “new NHL,” with its new rules designed to open up the game, ratings thus far indicate the league is not much more popular here than it was prior to the lockout.
There are some possible explanations, but TV executives are mystified by the size of the decrease.
Hockey Night In Canada ratings are off 19 per cent for the early game and a whopping 33 per cent for the late one compared to last year. TSN’s ratings have dropped 18 per cent.

That’s my que, right? Alright, then:
It’s over! The NHL is finished! The apocalypse has arrived, now that Canadian markets are tuning out their very own sport! Woe is the hockey fan, and woe is the world of hockey in general! It is doomed, and we can only sit by and watch!
I’m losing my touch, but it still gets the point across. Anyway, aren’t the demographics showing that VERSUS ratings are up this season, too? That certainly makes for an interesting twist.

I think they’re wrong and Ron’s right. There’s way too many inconsequential calls being made (some of the hooks seem to be the most outrageous). The WCHA games I watch seem more physical and faster (probably aren’t but that’s how they seem), and are certainly more entertaining. Don’t call the silly stuff that doesn’t affect play and the games will simply be better.
