Hockey Sticks in Mexico

From Wired ASAP,

It may be more than 100 degrees outside, but inside this factory about 25 minutes south of the U.S. border, more than 500 workers are busy making equipment for a sport played on a large sheet of ice.

And they’re pretty busy, churning out about 7,000 hockey sticks a week.  While Mexico is hardly the heart of hockey country, this is precisely where a large chunk of the NHL’s sticks are designed, tested and mass produced.

For the most part, hockey is about as foreign as a sport can get in Mexico, but the Easton Hockey plant has its own roller hockey team—and they’re well equipped, of course.

Easton and Warrior make their sticks in Mexico to cut labour costs, and many big manufacturers outsource their sticks...but the production values and “hockey know-how” are harder to translate to Chinese instead of simply sending a few stick techs to run the factory in TJ, but there are companies that almost completely produce their sticks in China or Vietnam now, including NikeBauer and Reebok.

It was surprising to go through the stick rack at Hockeytown Authentics and see Danny Markov’s stick say, “Made in China.”

Most companies do have production facilities in the U.S. or Canada, but they reserve production runs to professional sticks and high-end models.  TPS Hockey, for example, has four lines of sticks--the R2, R4, R6, and R8--but only the R8 is made in Canada, and that’s true of the “O-stick” and some Easton models.

Dear Sirs,
I, along with two partners, am starting a hockey equipment company, with an emphasis on quality sticks.  We already have two retail/wholesale companies and would like to hear from you as to what you can do for us.  My companies are in the New England area and have already established a client base.  We have contacted a number of companies in China but would initially like to deal with a Mexican company due to proximity.  Please contact me as soon as possible.  We are preparing for the 2009/10 season.  Thank-you!  Paul Murphy

Hi , i was wondering if Easton would sponsor a new Roller Hockey team in Queretaro with whatever they could. Me and my friend are ex hockey players we practiced this sport in Mexico , EU and Canada as teenagers and now that we are both 27 want to form a team in the town where we reside (Queretaro, Mx). We are planning on getting support from different companies in the state to attract people to start playing this sport as well as to get people who has played hockey before. Since the equipment is expensive only a certain group of people can practice it and we would like to extend the knowledge of hockeyas a sport beyond the economic barrier that exists and we see every day here in Mexico. I appreciate your attention for this matter and hope you guys can help us with any kind of sponsorship so we can make roller hockey to be a new fashion here in Mexico that will help create people like us that were touched by this sport and pass it to the next generations.
