Hockey Talk On A Stanley Cup Sunday Morning

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,

• Why Detroit should win the Stanley Cup: Nicklas Lidstrom, Brian Rafalski and Niklas Kronwall are better than any single Pittsburgh defenceman.

• Smart: Hiring Pat Quinn to coach the Edmonton Oilers. Smarter: Hiring Tom Renney to assist him. And now that GM Steve Tambellini has fixed his coaching staff, all he has to do is fix his messed-up roster.

• An NHL scout on pending free agent Jay Bouwmeester: “The hardest thing to do is evaluate a defenceman on a bad team. I don’t think anybody really knows how good this guy is.”

I think you could add Brad Stuart to that list too.  I think he is the most under-appreciated D-man (maybe even player) for the Wings this post season.

Brad Stuart turns into the hulk in the postseason.  He’s played huge minutes and been incredibly solid.

Gonchar is excellent when healthy, but I wonder if he is still hampered - wasn’t it a knee injury?  Those tend to linger sometimes.

I’d put a healthy Gonchar on par with Rafalski. They both play an adequate defensive game, but its their prowess on the attack that makes them special. Kronner and Stu have a slight edge defensively however.

but I’ve gotta give credit to Rafi. He had a nice one-on-one sticking with a partial Crosby breakaway last nite as well.

The only reason you can’t put Stuart in the company of 5, 28, and 55 is because he isn’t as potent offensively. He’s better defensively than Rafalski and Kronwall, though, but if you look at overall balance, Rafalski and Kronwall are better.

I will say though—Stuart’s first pass is not appreciated enough. He doesn’t get a lot of assists, but he’s often the guy that made the first of a string of three or four passes that lead to a scoring chance in the Wings’ transition game.
