Hope You Watched

from Jason Gay of the Wall Street Journal,

If you missed this contest, choosing to spend quality time with family, all we can say is, big mistake. It was a turbulent, fast-paced, anxiety-producing evening. Yes, that’s exactly like a Friday night with family, but still, you missed a classic.

No matter which side you were on, you spent the last five minutes of this game yelling at the TV. Hockey gets a bad rap as a TV sport—whiners moan they can’t see the puck, and critics complain its ratings place somewhere between “Last Call with Carson Daly” and a board of assessors’ meeting on public access. But NBC’s coverage was enthusiastic (we’ve grown to love sideline—sideice?—reporter Pierre McGuire) and its camerawork was spectacular.

The behind-the-net video of Pittsburgh goalie Marc-Andre Fleury flopping around, holding off a furious last-minute Detroit charge made us feel like we were right there on the ice.

Relax Wing fans, it is just a perspective from a non-hockey person with nothing better to do on a Friday.....I found it refreshing.

Relax, Gramps.  This isn’t just a Wings fans issue…

There’s the possibility that the NBC coverage - including Pierre McGuire - is appreciated more by the non-hockey faithful, I really don’t know. Beyond the associated drinking game, he’s not really my cup of tea as an analyst.

Pierre is very over the top - maybe he appeals to non-hockey fans who are more familiar with Dick Vitale?  If they are more used to loud, wacky analysts from other sports, they might not find him as off-putting as hockey fans - and they also get him in smaller doses instead of during the entire season.  That helps, I’m sure.

He’s not mine either and been muted on my TV all year, but his credentials are good.
He is just a pawn of the producers and sells what he is told to sell....it is survival, and good for him.
I would just as soon not having him living under the overpass in my neighborhood.
