from the CP via TSN,
Henrik Zetterberg says it was disrespectful for Penguins captain Sidney Crosby not to shake hands with all of Detroit’s players after Pittsburgh won the Stanley Cup.
“I think that’s one thing you should do,” the Red Wings’ Zetterberg said as the players cleaned out their lockers at Joe Louis Arena on Monday. “I don’t know why he didn’t do it, it’s disrespectful.”
The biggest snub after Friday night’s game was to Detroit captain Nicklas Lidstrom, who waited while Crosby celebrated winning the Cup with his teammates. But he finally left the ice with a few other Detroit players.
“Sidney was probably caught up in the emotions and everything,” Lidstrom said, adding that Crosby would learn from the situation.

Yeah, what a spoiled crybaby! Get him some tissues, he’s crying to damn much!

Exactly how is this:
“Sidney was probably caught up in the emotions and everything,”
...indicative of a spoiled crybaby? That makes no sense.
I blame the MSM. As long as they can keep “the Crosby snub” story going, they don’t have to write anything different and can feel free to be lazy and just write the same thing over and over with slightly different words.
Crosby skipped Lidstrom, he didn’t mean it, Lidstrom isn’t offended, and that should be it of the reporters would let it die.

First Draper, now Zetterberg.
Sorry for not being more clear.
Anyway…
“Sidney was probably caught up in the emotions and everything,” Lidstrom said, adding that Crosby would learn from the situation.

Both quotes were on Monday, hardly the media regurgitating a story. Blame the Wings. They had the option to keep their mouths shut.

The Crosby lovers got defensive really really quick on this. I dont think it was meant that Sidney purposely snubbed half the red wings. However, you’re gonna tell me it wasnt at least a bit careless as the captain to not take care of the handshake line quickly? And like lidstrom said, he will learn from this, he did get caught up in the excitement. No maliciousness Sids (or Lidstrom’s for that matter) part.

It was disrespectful of Sydney Crosby???
Weren’t the Wings players the ones that left the ice WITHOUT SHAKING HIS HAND???
Zetterburg shut down Crobsy pretty good during the games, but he should shut up and try losing with grace. Apparently, that’s harder than beating the Pens.

He’s just 21 - he’ll be learning from everything. He got caught up in the excitement and unintentionally snubbed someone, despite meaning no offense. Next time it happens he will either go through the handshakes more quickly, or if he misses someone just say afterwards, “I’m sorry, I meant no offense, I got distracted” and the whole thing will end right there.
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 06/15/09 at 03:03 PM ET
Unsurprisingly, the alledged victim of the transgression, Lidström, proves to be the levelheaded one among his peers.
In other news, the officiating sucked.

I’m so glad hockey season is over. Time to stop checking these blogs.

Such a foolish argument. He was probably late for the handshake line because he was doing one of a dozen interviews. The guy does more for the NHL then most players and then gets this kind of crap. Its not like he did it on purpose.
Posted by JF on 06/15/09 at 03:29 PM ET
He was probably wondering if, since his team won, now this means we’ll see nonstop ads and promos featuring the Wings like the league did last year for the Cup runner-ups…
Oh wait…

So I’ve been defending Crosby because it was obviously an unintentional snub, and I figured he’d apologize to the players involved and be done with it. Obviously I gave him too much credit. Is he just supremely socially awkward? I don’t give a crap what he says in the privacy of the Pens locker room, but the etiquette is pretty straightforward in this type of situation: contact the people involved, apologize, maybe chat for a couple minutes on a neutral topic, and move on. This isn’t hockey-specific stuff.
Posted by Sadie from Ann Arbor, MI on 06/15/09 at 04:14 PM ET
Lidstrom stated it for what it was worth. It is Draper & Zetterburg that seem to not be able to handle it. Lidstrom didn’t really wait around too long and saw Sid hadn’t gotten to the line yet and left. He himself said no big deal. And I bet next time around, Sid will not miss anyone. He respects the game as much as anyone, and does enough for the NHL that we should all be thankful. So if the some of the Wings just shut up about it, it can go by the wayside, as it should.

What? It’s a statement, and a true one at that. Whether he thinks he was in the wrong or not, do you think there’s any question that, should the Pens win again some time, Crosby won’t be the FIRST in line to shake hands?
Cripes, you Pens fans like to call Wings fans whiny but you act like petulent children.
And you gotta love this “Draper and Zetterberg keep bringing it up” BS.
Do you think that they weren’t responding to questions? Are you people that dumb to think that Detroit keeps bringing it up, and not that they KEEP getting interviewed by it?
Posted by Garth on 06/15/09 at 05:26 PM ET
That is why Lidstrom is Not only a hall of Fame Player, But also a Class Guy & why Draper & Now Zetterberg who I think is a great Players are just whiny Bitches who have to be in the spotlight no matter what
Here’s a Concept Zetterberg & Draper STFU ALREADY !!!!
Posted by Evilpens on 06/15/09 at 05:26 PM ET
Oh God forbid Hockey Jesus be questioned about his behavior. Give me break, he could have walked away from the interviews and got in the line, it’s been done before, and just like the Pens would stick up for their Captain (and have been) the Wings are sticking up for theirs.
To keep saying the Draper and now Zetterberg are whiners and just the spotlight is frankly just bullshit. Both players have proven themselves to be classy players that don’t have a track record of spouting off to the media. It bothered them so they said something and more than likely (as was said) after they were asked specifically about it.
Frankly Sidney could have been more apologetic but as is his arrogant way he had to qualify the living crap out his comments just like he goes out of his way to never give any credit to his opponents.
Lidstrom, is not going to get dragged into pissing contest as that’s not his way and never has been.
Crosby doesn’t get free pass just cause he’s 21. If he can’t handle the extras that come with the C then maybe someone else needs it for a few years.

More disrespectful that the ‘Captain’ of the losing team couldn’t wait for the winning team to come over and shake his hand. What a hypocrite. If the Pens had lost and didn’t come over you’d have an argument, but Crosby and company were all there last year to shake hands. No reason not to want to shake the hand of the team that beat you last year. Too bad Detroit can’t take the taste of defeat.

Paul, Re: Your Topic Title
Evidently you haven’t been around the Wings or their fans much. They didn’t let Draper’s facial at the hands of Lemiuex die for years and years. They’ll keep this thing alive for years as well. What a bunch of whiny losers. Thank the hockey gods for not letting them win another cup.

Posted by Maybe he wants to go back, and who could blame him on 06/15/09 at 06:42 PM ET
As I tend to do, I was listening to Toronto drive time radio and was actually shocked when Bob McCown and Nick Kypreos stated Crosby was at fault and made matters even worse when he said he did nothing wrong.
Kypreos pointed out Crosby was not dealing with just another captai- Lidstrom will be ranked as one of the greatest dmen of all-time that he disrespected.
Both pointed out it is the winning captain that should make the first move towards the opposing team and Crosby did not follow that pattern.
McCown went as far as to call Sid a punk and he should have known better, he has past experience at events like this and messed it up.
Posted by Paul from Motown Area on 06/15/09 at 06:55 PM ET
For Pete’s sake, Crosby wasn’t arrogant and Zetterberg and Draper aren’t whiners - reporters are LAZY and are going for the story that takes the least effort.
Crosby was caught up in the emotion and unintentionally missed shaking Lidstrom’s hand. Lidstrom, no doubt, didn’t want to be rude and shove right into the middle of the Penguins’ celebration. He took no offense. Draper and Zetterberg made comments in the heat of the moment that now keep getting repeated ad nauseum, and Crosby is quite possibly the clumsiest human being ever at apologizing (he had better never go into politics - the non-apology-apology is an essential skill).
Media types keep asking “were you bothered by the snub?” and “did you mean to avoid Lidstrom?” because it makes their lives easy if they don’t have to actually work hard to write a story. It hardly qualifies as a news flash that a 21-year old was socially clumsy - and that’s all he was.

And you’re a jackass. It’s fun calling people names.
If you don’t feel Crosby is arrogant fine, but his actions over the years have shown that he at least has an arrogant streak. He hardly ever gives credit to anyone not on his team.
The winning team celebrates a bit, does the handshake line, and then is presented with the trophies.
Been that way for years, and it didn’t change this year since most of the Pens managed to get over and do it. It’s not the responsibility of the losing team to hang around indefinitely until the Captain of the other team remembers his duty/manners.

It’s only news because of the whole LeBron James snub.
If the media doesn’t let the story die, it will follow Crosby a lot longer than it needs to and nobody will remember what Draper, Zetterberg, and Lidstrom said.

Evilpens - Sidney Crosby is a boor and you are a bore.
When Sidney goes swimming do you tell people he walked on water? Pens fans seem to get upset if you say anything remotely negative about Sidney, especially if it is true. You need to accept that Sidney isn’t perfect. Step out of your homer shoes and look objectively at some of the things that other team’s (not just the Red Wings) fans have complained about.

This is nothing more than the arrogant Red Wings expecting some “extra” respect for who they are. Newsflash: You lost. Stop crying, whining and making something out of nothing.
Why is it the Red Wings that get to determine when the handshakes start??? Watch the tape. Crosby was hugging the assistants and (the scratches) his teammates that didn’t dress but came out to celebrate.
The Pens waited around last year for the WINNERS to start the handshake. I was there!! The Red Wings waited three minutes. How is that disrespectful? Please get over it and yourselves!!!

Baroque, I believe that the Zetterberg quote came from today, in which case it was probably quite considered. Which I don’t find unreasonable; while I think the initial infraction was unintentional and easily pardonable, Crosby’s subsequent remarks on the incident were not the appropriate response. I agree that Crosby’s lack of social skills is to blame. Whether this is a reasonable excuse depends on if you judge him by the standards for 21-year-olds or the standards for NHL captains.
Pens fans are kinda blowing my mind with their overly defensive response to all this. My favorite part is the implication that the Wings don’t know how to lose. Look, I know the Wings have had more than their share of success in recent years, but they have plenty of experience losing at all levels of the playoffs. Yet this is the first time this has been an issue. That doesn’t make them stop and think—even just for a second—that maybe Sidney made a tiny little mistake?

This talk won’t die because hockey season is over but hockey writers still must turn in articles, no matter how pointless. The entry draft and free agency can’t get here soon enough…
Ten bucks says Crosby and Lidstrom, while they’ll never be best buds, will shake hands and roll their eyes at all this BS at the awards show in a couple days.
Every team’s fan base has some sore losers, it’s just Detroit’s turn to flaunt them.

How retarded is this? This isn’t making Crosby look bad, this is making some of the red wings look like they’re 10 year olds. Sore loser is a general phenomenon but not one I expected from a team that won a cup last year. The only mistake crosby made was not spitting in franzen’s face.

Okay i think that zetterberg and Draper have let it go and i think the media and reporters should let the *#$%@& thing go.NHL will do anything to make ANY team look horrible then the next min amazing! Ugh well bettman got what he wanted, the pens won yay congrats(comming from a wings fan) now everybody can move on with there lifes and just focus on the next season(i cant wait!) and if the pens fans think theres going to be a repeat next year, its not gonna happen unless you put alot of effort like the wings did to get to the finals. But since your team wont be fully rested up this summer, there gonna be a bit sloppy(Its what people call:The Stanley Cup hangover). Oy and pen fans get over it the season ended who cares your not gonna hear from the wings till next season and theres nothing you can do bout what they say but hey its your opinion not mine. And to me (dont go bitching at me) It looks like crosby was being a bit disrespectful if he didnt shake hands but like lidstrom said he will learn
Best of luck to All teams next year :D I’ll be rooting for a capitals vs pens game….that was a very entertaining round 2.

Considering they’ve actually met and played against him their view holds more worth to me than your pathetic excuses.
His age is no excuse, its not like he’s the only young guy in the NHL and I don’t see anyone railing on them for poor manners.
Malkin’s only 23 and he had enough manners and respect to be up there shaking hands.

via Austin Knoblauch of the Fabulous Forum at the LA Times,
Crosby is merely guilty of getting too caught up in the moment. The thrill of winning his first Stanley Cup finally dissolved the immense expectations that were placed on his shoulders by the post-lockout NHL’s rebuilding/marketing strategy (whether you agree with it or not, the league crowned Crosby its prince on draft day 2005).
He has been the face of the NHL for the last four years, and it would be nice if some older players, who have undoubtedly benefited from the exposure he has helped bring to the game, would be a little more understanding about his handshake faux pas.

You know, it’s strange how some people think that good sportsmanship is only for the losing team. You make a point about childish behavior by the Wings and then say Crosby should have spit on Franzen…I don’t quite get the logic. I would have to say that your idea of sportsmanship is, like so many other Penguin’s fans, extremely twisted by your gloating. Other Penguin’s fans have complained about the booing by Detroit spectators as something outrageous that didn’t happen last year. That is a result of selective memories because the fans at Mellon arena did, in fact, boo.
