Horrible Refereeing

via Adrian Dater of All Things Avs,
The officiating in this Game 3 is god-awful, and two good teams like these deserve better.
Peter Forsberg’s goalie interference penalty in the second period was one of the worst calls I’ve seen in a long, long time. What’s the penalty, competing to try and get your stick on the puck and score a goal in front of the net?
Henrik Zetterberg was called for a phantom interference penalty in the second, and Cody McLeod was called for high-sticking in the first period when his stick never touched….anybody.
I also thought Samuelsson dove on that “high-stick” of Forsberg’s in the second, giving the Wings a four-minute PP.
note: added by Dater sometime overnight to his blog…
Update: OK, I guess Sammy lost a tooth on that play. I didn’t see that at first, and should have pointed that out. But I still don’t think Forsberg’s stick was very high. It was more of an accident to me than a high stick.
Cudos to Adrian doing the update he did in blogger fashion. Too many time bloggers decide to sneak in or delete a line or two, hoping they won’t be caught.

I don’t know, the blood spurting from Sammy’s mouth might indicate he took a high stick and the automatic 4 minutes ensued.

FSN Detroit showed Joe Louis staff picking up Sammy’s teeth. He lost two.

High-sticking on McLeod looked like a bad call to me.
Holding on McCarty was a bad call, too (just because your arm is close to another player doesn’t mean you’re holding him).
Interference on Zetterberg was questionable (yeah the guy fell down, but only because he was off-balance, trying to get up, when he and Zetterberg accidentally bumped).
I didn’t see the replay of the Forsberg interference call, so I don’t know about that one.
Forsberg hit Samuelsson in the face with his stick. It may not have been intentional, but it was dangerous and stupid. Anyone who claims Samuelsson “dove on” his stick should be euthanized for the sake of humans everywhere. This guy gets to use up valuable resources like food, water, and air? He should be the poster child for abortion.

Yeah, Forsberg goes Chris Simon on Samuelsson’s mouth and the refs actually had the balls to call a penalty on it!

Sharks got outplayed tonight, but their first goal was stolen from them on a horrendous call. Zebras just having a bad night?

Hey Dater how do you “dive” your way into a high stick call you hack? I guess the blood was fake.
It’s a good thing Floppa was dressed in order to have more PIM than ice time.

everything to do with the dive is just retarded

Wow that has to go as one of the dumbest thing an Avs fan/blogger/reporter has ever said. Please correct me if I am wrong.

And I am of course talking about the really great dive by Sammy.

Courtesy of AP’s summary at NHL.com:
“I didn’t realize I hit him,” Forsberg said. “But I guess he was bleeding so I guess I did hit him, so I have nothing to say. If he’s bleeding, it’s four minutes. I didn’t think I hit him that hard.”
Forsberg added that he felt Samuelsson sold the call.
“Definitely. He’s laying there on the ice and I barely touched him,” Forsberg said.
Ass.

If a stick isn’t “up very high,” how can it catch someone in the mouth when he’s standing up? Accident or not, unintentional high sticks are still penalties. Them’s the rules.

Hate to say it, but I appreciate this post by Adrienne.
Though it’s pretty crazy to say that it wasn’t a deserving four-minute penalty when Samuelsson lost some teeth on the play. Yes, he made a meal of it the way he went down and jerked his head back, but the rulebook says, no matter how accidental, and no matter how light, a high-stick is to be called, and if blood is drawn, a double-minor is assessed.
So give me a break, Adrienne, that was a call that the ref HAD to make. It’s not one that is open for judgment.

es, he made a meal of it the way he went down and jerked his head back
suppose maybe it hurts a tad to have your teeth knocked out with a hockey stick?
sold it my ass.

So what did Forsberg and Dater think happens when you two-hand a player in the mouth?
The crime here wasn’t that it was too harsh, it actually should have been 5 minutes probably. One-handers can be an accident. Two handers when the players are looking face-to-face after a play? Not so much…
I wonder what Peter’s excuse is for the other lame penalties he took?

Come on now Paul, no Wing-on-Wing hate this time of year…
The only point I was trying to make was that regardless of whether or not he embelished a little, the penalty wasn’t one of interpretation, it was a cut-and-dry foul that has to be called, and has to be called as four minutes. I try to look at it from Adrienne’s perspective, then from mine, and admit that the truth is probably somewhere in the middle, considering we’re biased in opposite directions.
So gimme a break, we’re on the same team here!

Forsberg is a desperate, ineffective Liar. Piece of crap. I used to respect him. He should remember that 25 (red) is back on the ice and to carefully reflect on what he did to 22 (blue) a few years back. Jackass. And where’s Bettman in all this? Worrying about octopi…
