Wow… the big name teams really aren’t playing into today as much as most thought.  Did anyone have the Pens in the running for Hossa?  Crosby, Malkin, Hossa?  Ouch.

Seems like a stretch to me—Penguins must have enough offense by now—but it’s coming down to the wire, so I figured on giving Sportsnet’s rumor some space.

Guess we’ll see what happens shortly.

Pittsburgh would make sense.  They have the young depth to make a deal like this.  Staal would have to be involved in this deal.

Is this rumour started just ‘cause it’s been quiet in the last 20 minutes and someone had to say something?

Or is Crosby more hurt than originally thought?

Crosby has 10 times better leadership than I do and does more with less talent around him.  I’m a nobody and will never win another Superbowl.  Steelers suck

Actually this is a bit of a misunderstanding!
A graphic read “Rumour Mill: Hossa to Penguins.” However, it was started by Kypreos who stated that Crosby needed a winger. He then declared that Shero was not trying hard enough to do this.
That is why TSN is not reporting anything.

Nope, but Nick Kypreos is almost as well-informed/bright (take your pick)

Think the price for Hossa went up with what Washington has been doing?

If they are going to trade him AND compete for the playoffs, they are going to need a ton.

Is it at all possible the price has gone down for him?  Maybe I’m hoping a bit, but even the Richards trade was pretty even in terms of team needs.  Granted, Richards didn’t necessarily HAVE to leave TB, but they were able to get fair value.

What I’m saying is could you see PIT only giving up, say, Esposito, Armstrong/Christensen (one or the other), and a high pick?  That’s still kind of a lot for a “rental”, and I surely don’t think I’m be comfortable paying that price if I’m Shero.  We’ll just have to see (and for me, pray we don’t get hosed)…

I think it’s funny that the increase in offense they might get from Hossa is offset by the extra goals they’ll allow with the acquisition of Gill.

They should try to spin Gill back to Toronto for less than half of what we gave up.  I want him that little.

This is a freaking horrible trade for the Pens. Armstrong = Grit.
Christensen was developing nicely, shootout was gold.
Espo will be amazing.
AND A First rounder!!!?!?!

Why not throw in crosby, malkin, staal and whitney.

And, oh yeah, good luck resigning malkin, staal and hossa.  Someone is going to have to open their wallets, and as we all know, thats a huge problem in Pittsburgh.

They really squandered their future, real shame.

talk about the ultimate rental player. there is NO WAY IN HELL pens are resign him.

I can’t argue with getting a guy like Hossa, but I’ll miss Army and EC in the shootout. There’s countless articles about how Armstrong was the guy that kept the locker room light with jokes/pranks/etc… Plus, that he’s best friends with Crosby. Let hope that we didn’t just f--- up our chemistry. Lemieux better open up the coffers if we want to keep Hossa, Malkin, and Staal.

There is absolutely no way the Pens will be able to re-sign Hossa.  They have to extend Malkin and Staal.  They’re just going for it this year and taking the risk.

Staal and Geno both might, MIGHT** be willing to take less if they can get Hossa on the same page.  They all want a cup, and they’ll all still get filthy rich.  Maybe I’m just an optimist, but I think it can work short-term (2-3 years).

My question, where’s Fleury in all of this?

FlyersFan - I’m aware of the salary cap, but also aware than the Penguins have a self-imposed budget underneath said salary cap. They need to increase their budget, and work some magic. It’s all possible, but Shero needs to have the money to work with first.

We’ll see how this trade turns out in the playoffs. Too early to tell. They did give up quite a lot for winger without addressing defense, but there isnt much you can to Pittsburgh’s defense without completely revamping it. Atleast we’re not philly.

but trading for a player who wants cindy crosby money and trade apart of core and future of your hockey team for a guy who will play only20+ games and playoffs is ricdicous. it doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out that the pens have screwed themselves down the road for a guy who will not play for them next year and in the process destoryed the core of the team

Posted by FlyersFan on 02/26/08 at 03:34 PM ET

Avatar

Destroying the core of the team would have been giving up Staal.  Colby may have been one of the “glue” guys, but his production is going to be replaced by Dupuis.  I was never very high on Christensen, but I am sad to see him go.

I think Esposite is the x-factor here.  If he never pans out, then this deal is a wash if Hossa doesn’t resign.  He’s the difference-maker as far as I’m concerned.  There will be more Christensens and Colbys, but not many Hossas or Espos.  I’m not gonna decry this trade, but I’m sure I’ll have something (good or bad, ehhh we’ll see) come June/July.

I’m just looking forward to April/May now.

Go Pens.

Eat it Flyers. wink

If Hossa walks in the offseason, you might be right. If he signs, then we’ll see. If they win the Cup, then it was worth it. Besides, Esposito couldn’t make the Canadian National team this year, despite having a decent season in juniors, so he’s no guaranteed future star. High prospect, sure. The 1st round pick this year could hurt as it’s supposed to be a deep draft. Either way, Hossa signs or we win the Cup, the trade was a win, if he bolts, no good. Anyone who tells me that they knows what will happen at this point is a liar.

Being from Montreal, let me just say that Bob should have not said anything instead of saying he was going after big fish. He has now given the media a golden reason to destroy him. I guarantee he won’t be making any promises come UFA hunting season. I really hope he starts signing some of our soon-to-be-RFAs before some idiots start putting phat contracts on their heads.

I still think Pittsburgh will fall short of the Cup. The Western teams are still better. I don’t think they’ve necessarily destroyed the core of their team however. Waddell basically traded his cherry for a couple of grit guys, a likely soft prospect bust and a 1st rounder. I’d love to see what Gainey really had on the table. Maybe he was trying to stiff Waddell.

Pittsburgh = 8-1-1 against the West (no Detroit, so I’m aware of that).  Let’s stop predicting and just watch.  The team plane could crash tomorrow.  I’m fine waiting till June to start thinking.

I think the pens had the making of a dynasty, but they gave up way too much.  I am seriously questioning Shero as a capable GM.  Up to this point he was spot on, but now.....I’m not so convinced.

Does anybody really think the Pens have an honest chance of winning the cup??  Ottawa or New Jersey will blow them out in 5.

The worst part is I became a Pens fan after Lemieux’s 1st comeback, so I watched them go through the whole rebuilding phase in the early 00’s.  Now its all for a rental (let’s be honest here) player.  I love the pens, but I would really like the Pens to lose to Atlanta via an Armstrong or Christensen goal, or Hossa to get run-over by Armstrong.

All-in-all, I think they would have won more cups in the next 10 years if they would have just let all the players mature.

Shero = IDIOT
