Hossa Wants The Cup

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,

A day after three dozen or so of his peers went chasing after the most dollars they could possibly grab, Marian Hossa left tens of millions on the table Tuesday to sign a modest one-year, $7.4 million deal with the Detroit Red Wings.

Hossa was being greedy all right — but not in the conventional sense of the term. At the age of 29 and 10 years into his NHL career, Hossa was greedy for a Stanley Cup — and figured his best chance to win one was to go to the defending champions.

great choice, he took less money, no life insurance deal (in this CBA environment) and choose to go for the Cup! chapeau!

Let’s not get totally crazy here. He’s still guaranteed 7.45 million. I don’t know about everyone else, but even living the high-life, I think that’s a pretty good “insurance policy”.

Nevermind what he’s already banked.

Great article Paul!!  Here are a couple of lines I found particularly interesting:

Hossa finished the playoffs third in playoff scoring with 26 points in 20 games, one behind the co-leaders, Sidney Crosby and Henrik Zetterberg, and he was the most productive Penguins forward in the final.

“Success is about sacrifice — sacrificing ice time, sacrificing personal statistics, sacrificing some money,” said Holland. “Success doesn’t come easily. Marian, obviously, wants to come here because he thinks we give him the best chance to win the Stanley Cup. He’s showing incredible sacrifice — and it goes to his determination and character and how important winning is to him, and playing with other good players.”

To think, assuming Holland inks Val. Filppula, the Wings Cup roster is the same, BUT with the addition of Hossa.  WOW!

Still I’m surprised he played it smart going for the best place to win not just the money. Though admitting 7.4 million isn’t small by any stretch of the imagination. But after losing in the finals he knows a good team and clearly wants to go for it again. Can always cash in next years UFA period.

Wings get even better and Hossa gets a really good team.

This deal is perfect for Hossa… 1 year. Next year, with the good possibility of having a cup under his belt, he may be worth more.  And get more he will.
