Ritch Winter, Marian Hossa’s agent, tells Sporting News Today that he is optimistic a deal will get worked out, allowing Hossa to re-sign with the Red Wings.

Is it possible to be tremendously excited and terribly concerned about one signing at the same time?
Oh, and Pittsburgh only has itself to blame for the Hossa situation. The idea that Hossa ‘owed’ it to Pitt to re-up with them is juvenile.

Prepare to get stabbed in the back, Red Wings fans.
Well, as a Red Wings fan and an adult, I hope that Hossa re-signs, but knowing that the Wings are going to be up against the cap for sure if they sign Hossa, I’ll understand if he’s wearing a new uniform next year.
And I’m sure that if he signs with anyone other than the Pens you’ll take THAT as an offense too…

The difference is that many of us Wings fans will actually prefer to wait until there is a presser at the Joe with all of the priniciples involved and THEN we’ll believe it. If he’s not re-signed, fine. We’ve won the Cup without him anyway. In fact, we’ve won the Cup against him.
I love Hossa in the Wings sweater. He’s done wonders for us but we’ve also learned a lot from the Fedorov fiasco.
We’ll believe it when we see it.

Sounds like Hossa recognizes he has to get something done now or his chances of staying will be dramatically reduced. I’m really in awe of the two-way game this guy plays, but unless he signs for exactly what The Mule will take (probably a 5M average over 8+ years), I say, “Thanks for the highlight-reel goals and the stellar defense, big guy, but we can’t afford you.”
In the end Mule + Hudler is better for the Wings than Hossa alone. Mule isn’t as flashy as Marian, but he’s just coming into his own as a goal scorer. Three years from now, Mule may actually be the better player. Even if he isn’t, I don’t want to see the Wings lose Happy just to keep Hossa.
On the other hand, we all know Tick Tock has the ability to make the new NHL math fit his needs so it’ll be fun to watch what he does in the next couple of months.
