How About Gilmour

from Darren Dreger of TSN,

Perhaps, MLSE steals a page from the Dallas Stars playbook and swaps experience for celebrity?

With no obvious candidate available or interested at the moment, primarily because of the current structure of the hockey department, why wouldn’t the Leafs look within?

With guidance from an experienced man like Maple Leafs assistant general manager and director of player personnel, Mike Penny, former Leafs captain Doug Gilmour might be able to bridge the gap.

Gilmour would instantly grab headlines and similar to Brett Hull’s appointment in Dallas, Gilmour might be able to provide a short term public relations spin.

My personal, gut feeling, Scotty Bowman will end up in Toronto, even though all published reports do not indicate that.

added 11:43am, from Scott Burnside at ESPN,

What is even more embarrassing for this Original Six franchise is, even in the face of this free fall, ownership is so paralyzed by its constant infighting and lack of direction that it appears powerless to react.

When players pull the chute and lose 11 of 13, as the Leafs have done at a crucial juncture of the season, a normal team’s owner will come down from his/her perch and fire either the GM or coach or both, or mandate a dramatic change in player personnel.

Sadly, I will not be surprised at all if you’re right.

If Scotty does go to TO, do you think he calls back his favorite assistant, Barry Smith, from Russia to take over as coach?

I agree with ya, Paul, but TO would be wise to look at Bowman’s tenure in Buffalo before making that leap…  Not only is Scotty old, but he’s not exactly the best GM in the world…  Much better coach.

Hope he stays in Detroit.

Bowman’s trip to Buffalo as GM was almost 30 years ago mudshark, the guy’s forgotten more about the game in that time than any of us, or his peers for that matter, will ever know.  Age aside, the man is as smart as they come.

The name alone commands respect, and he’s exactly the type of winner the Leafs have been lacking for so long.

And I don’t think it’s the GM position Bowman would be taking, rather the President’s title, with his own GM and coach to follow.

Yeah, but betting the franchise on a name is exactly the point.  This whole business has the whiff of publicity seeking rather than strict hockey sense.

I’m not saying Scotty wouldn’t do a good job, but if I’m MLSE, I have serious questions about his ability to oversee the entire franchise…

The saying in Buffalo is “that as a GM, Scotty Bowman made a great coach.” What he will bring to the table is the highest degree of respect and the ability to attract talent and for that job he would make amuch better President.

Why would Scotty Bowman want to get involved with a dysfunctional organization like MLSE?  Heck, Ken Dryden tried for a few years and realized that his efforts were futile.

The first step in righting the Leafs ship is to sell the team to this Shnaider fellow (or some other rich billionaire (Hello, Mr. Blackberry), and get rid of Tannenbaum and Peddie.

The only Gilmour qualified for such a disfunctional organization is HAPPY.

I also don’t know why Scotty would want to go to a dysfunctional organization like MLSE.  Peddie micromanages to an extreme and seems to be at constant odds with Tannenbaum.  If the right and left hands are fighting each other, how the heck do you ever get anything done?  Why would someone like Scotty want to get into a mess like that—as perhaps the last big thing he can do in hockey?

Scotty would be able to attract the “right” hockey people to help him run the organization so I don’t think one has to focus on how he would do this all by himself.  He knows the league and how to win better than anyone else (or as well as anyone else considered elite, to avoid any pissing contests).  I think it would be a huge loss to the Wings organization.  Yet I doubt that he can recruit the best in the business if he doesn’t have the freedom and authority to make changes when he feels their necessary, not after some boards and committees review matters at their quarterly meeting.  Surely he’s cognizant of that.
