How About Rangers - Islanders For Next Winter Classic?

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

Now that it has a hit on its hands, the NHL should whenever possible use the Winter Classic as a vehicle to help needy markets and franchises.

Which is why next season’s Winter Classic should be played in New York between the Islanders New York Islanders and Rangers New York Rangers , whether at this new rich mans’ palace masquerading as Yankee Stadium or at the Mets New York Mets ’ new ballpark with the stigmatized name, or in Central Park….

We know. The national TV ratings would take a beating. So what? It’s a singular affair. The NHL claims that TV ratings are secondary, anyway, when they lag, so what is the purpose of constructing a one-day exhibition simply to inflate numbers on a fleeting basis?

A Jan. 1, 2010 outdoors Battle of New York would energize and elevate the Islanders. It would give this woebegone club a spotlight event. It would put hockey on the back page in New York, and not only for a day, but for a number of days.

Two words:

Fat.  Chance.

No way the NHL is going to go with anything less than a compelling matchup (which means lousy teams need not apply).  This isn’t a welfare handout to poor teams, but a golden goose for the league.  They are going to milk it for all it’s worth and maybe kill it that way, but I can’t see them putting a bad team in it because they don’t want to look bad on such a large stage.

So what?  So let me spell this out for you then:

NOBODY OUTSIDE OF NEW YORK CARES ABOUT NEW YORK.  New York is not the center of the universe.  Nobody in the rest of the country or North America cares about them.

Read that again.  Nobody outside of New York cares about New York.

Got it now, finally?  Good.

I don’t know about you guys, but when I look at the WC, it looks more like a vehicle to make lots of money, not so much a vehicle to help needy franchises.
