How About The WJC In Canada Every Year?

from Ken Campbell of the Hockey News,

There is a movement afoot to have the World Junior Championship in Canada permanently and you might be surprised by who is in favor and who is against it happening.

On the side in favor is International Ice Hockey Federation president Rene Fasel, who reasons that Canadian crowds generate enormous revenues and make it a once-in-a-lifetime experience. On the other side is Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson, who is clearly wary of killing a golden goose by giving Canada too much of a good thing.

“I think there is a good chance (of moving the WJC to Canada permanently),” Fasel said. “Bob is not an easy guy to negotiate with, but if he wants to have the tournament here every year then we have to find a way to make it work for the other federations.”

Do it every other year.

Alternate between Europe/Russia and Canada..

Forget about hosting it in the US, unless it is in Minnesota.

Why not just make it an all Canadian tournament and save the money of the other teams having to travel to Canada every Christmas?

Having it in Canada every year would be a mistake.

Have it in like this

Year One - Canada
Year Two - Russia/European
Year Three - Canada
Year Four - Northern US State (i.e. Buffalo, Detroit, NY, Boston, Minnesota, etc)

Repeat

It should be hosted in all regions of the world where hockey enjoys a good following. Excluding the US is stupid, though south Florida might not be a good idea (outdoor temperature affecting ice conditions). I see no reason to not play in places like Kansas City, Denver, or Nashville.

Alan - sorry. You see no reason not to have it in places like Kansas City? Really?

This is an event that frankly needs to go to a city with some kind of hockey pedigree. I’m not saying that as a northern/Canadian hockey snob, I’m just saying that, like, outside of Canada and a few other pockets of the world, no one is even aware of the existence of this tournament.

What makes anyone think that Kansas City could support this, or do the tournament proper justice?

The current plan is to be in Canada every three years; it’s back next year because Switzerland gave up their right to host out of fear of not qualifying (they made it, anyway).  I think that’s perfectly reasonable.

That being said, it’s basically four years in a row of home games for Canada: Ottawa, Saskatoon/Regina, Buffalo is just across the border and already well-patronized by Torontonians and other southern Ontarians, and Calgary/Edmonton.
