How Could Patrick Kane Be So Stupid?

from David Kaplan of Kap’s Corner at ChicagoNow,

How could Kane be this stupid? Everyday we hear stories of athletes getting in trouble and you would think that a young man with the world at his fingertips and a family that is looking out for him and is very involved in his life wouldn’t make a mistake like this. Then again, it is another lesson that can be used with our kids on the stupid decisions that people make and the consequences of their actions.

I have heard from many fans at the both the radio and TV stations that I work at who complain that Kane is rude and doesn’t sign autographs as much as some fans feel he should. I have heard from various sources in the NHL who seem to think that Kane’s success has gone to his head and that he is not as mature as he should be. Immaturity is one thing for a 20 year old but punching a cab driver at 5 am after he didn’t have 20 cents in change is entirely another.

Could Kane have possibly thought that no one would recognize him in his hometown?

more

added 8:28pm, from Mike Kiley of ChicagNow,

In some circles in Chicago Kane’s stock has just gone up. He will now be expected to actually hit another human being on skates next season. It may not be a full season, but Kane better be willing to match his new reputation and turn a deaf ear to all the opponents who will be teasing the hell out of him in a downgrading manner.

Dallas’ Sean Avery was suspended last season essentially for bad taste for making ugly sexual remarks about a former girlfriend. If it can be proven that Kane mugged a cabbie, commissioner Gary Bettman is going to have to flex his muscles and suspend him.

Bettman can’t allow the NFL and Roger Goodell to have all the fun. He has to whack Kane if allegedly can be proven absolutely.

What was it Semin said a little while ago?  He’d much rather be like Kane, and what’s so special about Crosby?

from Tim Sassone of Between the Circles at the Chicago Daily-Herald,

If those facts come back and prove Kane guilty of what the Buffalo police allege he did, the Hawks have a huge mess on their hands.

It could lead Kane out of town.

Even before the events of Sunday, there were those with connections to the Hawks who have wondered if Kane was worth keeping considering the money he is likely to command when his contract runs out after this season.

How does a cab driver not have adequate change? Good on Kane and his cousin. Knowing how much cab fares are nowadays the driver probably drove a whole block and got more than he deserved.

Better question - How does a millionaire hockey player let his ass get arrested over a buck f-ing 20?

I like how Kane is such a doucher that he’s SMILING in his mugshot.

And if this were Roger Goodell’s call, Kane would be suspended and fined right away, if not indefinitely suspended pending the investigation.

Now, dammit CJBear, if you’re going to start throwing logic into this discussion, you know all of the mindless Hawks fans are going to get all discombobulated. Please try to understand their point of view.

One of their underage stars got in a fight at 5:00 am over 20¢. In their minds, that’s clearly grounds for blackening both eyes of a 50-something cabbie. Surely, you can understand how a guy who only made $3.725M last year would have to fight for every penny.

Right?

By the way, in the kid’s defense, he hasn’t achieved a level of public outrage and stupidity in assault that Patrick Roy was known for.  But it’s early, and he’s not off to a great start…

I hear, back in Sweden, Jonny Ericsson was gypped on a cab fare last offseason.  Poliz say they’re still searching for one of the driver’s extremities.  The other three were found.  In his ass.

Here’s to Jonny Ericsson!

Very unfortunate. Just yesterday, my son ordered a copy of the soon to be released NHL 09 at a local video game store. This year’s edition is featuring Patrick Kane on the cover. Kane is plastered all over the instore promotion as well. I hope they suspend release of the game and change the cover if, in fact, he is found culpable for the actions alleged. There are a multitude of other players who represent the game with respect and dignity that are deserving of this honor.

I know it is a mistake to look at today’s athletes as role models for the younger generation, but whether we like it or not kids look up to them. Overall, hockey has a pretty good track record when it comes to players who are involved in criminal activities and drug use. I have often pointed out this contrast to those outside of the hockey community to help promote the sport.

Bottom line, hockey has received another black eye.

I actually jumped to Kane’s defense in here earlier when I first read the allegation, citing the well-known fact that people that young are prone to do stupid things.

I’d like to back off that stance for now.  I may have been a stupid 20 year old at some point in my life, but I was never that stupid.  He absolutely has to be suspended (since it’s not the playoffs).  Maybe a good suicide pass from Brian Campbell up the middle with Niklas Kronwall bearing down on him would knock some sense into him.

Does anyone find it a bit interesting that Kane showed more fight over 20 cents at the end of a cab ride than he did in the Western Conference Finals?

That… that doesn’t sound good.

Maybe, and I’m just spitballing here, but maybe Quennville should threaten Pat with having to ride a Metro Car or something.  That might motivate him.

as a twenty year old myself (until a few days ago), i’ve gotta say that, while i’ve done some incredibly, epically dumb things while drunk, violence has not been amongst them. the other night i was in a cab across london that took pretty much an hour, cost £40 (that’s probably about $60-70 i think), where the driver got fairly aggressive when we pointed out he didn’t know the way… but neither me nor my mates felt the need to rough him up.

obviously we don’t yet know the full story, but whatever it is doesn’t excuse beating the guy up. the most worrying thing actually is that kane pled not guilty - if he did actually do it, then it’s kinda concerning that he is unable to ‘fess up to his drunken mistakes.

I can’t believe the initial reaction from Wings fans here. First off, everyone coming to his defense (Malik? c’mon) WTF is that!

Second, everyone else has simply called Kane “stupid”, etc.

How come nobody else had the same initial reaction that I did? This is AWESOME! HILARIOUS! and a glorious EMBARRASSMENT for both Kane and the team? Now the Hawks have to deal with THIS instead of other off season work. Now this will be a distraction well into the season, whether he is punished or not. Now kids all across the city of Chicago (my home, by the way) are waking up confused, wondering why their role model is so mean and violent! I LOVE it! Kane is going to have to sheepishly apologize to the fans in Chicago. And whether they admit it or not, deep down, they will all be thinking to themselves, “damnit, can this team really do that well with classless psychos on the team. I mean would something like this EVER happen to anyone on a classy championship caliber team… like (gulp) the Wings”.

I LOVE it!

If that is the case then he should also be charged with under age drinking as well as assault. It is still against the law to consume alcohol until the age of 21.

The second piece of that quote explains the answer laid out in the first.  While I’m glad anytime the Blackhawks have a problem, this is bad for hockey.  Besides, I don’t want to beat a distracted Blackhawks team at any given time.  I want to beat the best, most well-rested and prepared Blackhawks team they can field.  That way, when the Wings beat them, they won’t have some excuse for it.

i see your point for sure. it’s definitely the high road, if there is such a thing. although the whole “bad for the league” thing has just been rendered completely meaningless with G.Bettman at the helm. it’s a romantic notion, but EVERYTHING that happens seems bad for the league.

i think maybe my dislike for Kane plays into my feeling of elation over this. when i think of other players i don’t like, especially rivals, i think i’d find it just as great if they got arrested for something this stupid.

ie. it’d would make my day if crosby got caught with a prostitute. or pronger with a basement meth lab. or corey perry with a heroine filled condom shoved up his a-hole.

but if this happened with a player I respected, I’d probably feel different about it… no matter what team they were on. of course, this leads to the essential point here - this would never happen to a player I respected.

HEY GUYS!

Let’s all jump to hasty conclusions while the cab driver’s attorney just said the issue has been blown out of proportion. Chicago beat-writers and non-Blackhawk fans are the idiot for this one.

I, for one, accept our new 5 foot 9 overlord in Detroit for the 2010-2011 season.

When you hear things from an attorney in a civil matter like ‘we can work this out’, it’s pretty obvious things are entering the ‘you, sir, are going to have to pay us off to keep this from exploding all over you’ mode.

By the attorney, not the driver who may have to testify in a case mind you but the attorney, saying things were overblown he is obviously providing a little bit of cover for Kane to send them a big check, demonstrating how quickly this whole mess can go away if he does so.

If Kane is as tight with his checkbook as he is with his changepurse, however, you won’t see another concilliatory statement from the cabbie, his attorney, or anyone else not directly in the employ of the Blackhawks.
