How Do The Divisions Rank?

from Adam Proteau of the Hockey News,
The focus on divisions brings up an interesting exercise – namely, ranking them. With that in mind, Screen Shots is pleased to present one schlep’s rankings and explanations of the best and worst divisions (yes, of course I mean on paper) in the league today.
1. Pacific. Let’s see, we’re talking about a division that can boast a one-year removed Cup winner in Anaheim, one of last season’s Western Conference finalists in the Dallas Stars and a San Jose Sharks team that will once again cause a majority of hockey writers to go all 12-year-old-girl-at-a-Jonas-Brothers-concert on their readerships.

If each division went 1-1 against other divisions in their conference, how can you argue one is better than the other two?
I dunno, how do those east-coasters keep up their Crosby-Ovechkin debates? Oh yeah, they use opinion.

Rankings like this are pretty pointless, really. There’s no way to prove anything (other than the Southeast is the worst—I’ll give you that one).
Looking at the West, here’s how many points each division earned last season against the other two:
Nor 225
Pac 222
Cen 216
Seems pretty clear cut that the Central is the worst, right? Yet they out-pointed the Northwest head-to-head, 113-110. The Central was also the only one with a winning record in regulation time:
Cen 82-78
Pac 80-80
Nor 75-79
But the Central absolutely blew in extra time, while the Northwest was pretty damned good:
Nor 29-17
Pac 22-18
Cen 12-28
What does this prove? Pretty much nothing (other than OT/shootouts can make quite a difference, but we already knew that). If each division went 1-1 against other divisions in their conference, how can you argue one is better than the other two?
