How Should The Game Finish?

from Stu Hackel of SlapShot at the NY Times,

t has divided fans, some of whom love the spectacle (particularly younger fans and those in newer markets), others who think that a hockey game should be decided by playing hockey. There is always rumbling during the playoffs, especially after long overtime games, that the skills competition be employed to settle Stanley Cup games. That happened last spring. The outcry against that is usually quite loud.

It also messed up lots of statistical categories, producing absurdities (no one is credited with a winning goal, for example, but a game is won nonetheless; a goalie can get both a shutout and a loss, as happened this past week to San Jose’s Evegni Nabokov) which are inevitable with pragmatic ideas not fully thought through.

Actually, I would prefer that they get rid of overtime in regular season games too.  I don’t mind ties.  But if they ever mess with playoff games… I don’t think I could ever get over that.

Ties in regular season, overtimes until a win in the playoffs.

It’s not rocket surgery, after all.  smile
