Huet Not An Elite Goalie

from Brian Costello of the Hockey News,
The fact of the matter is if I’m an NHL GM and I’m starting up a team and I have one year to win a championship, Huet is not among the top 10 goalies I’d pick to be my starter.
Here are 10 goalies I wouldn’t hesitate picking before Huet: Martin Brodeur, Roberto Luongo, Miikka Kiprusoff, Evgeni Nabokov, Henrik Lundqvist, J-S Giguere, Ryan Miller, Ilya Bryzgalov, Tomas Vokoun and Marty Turco.
I’d probably even pick some of this next tier of goalies before Huet: Niklas Backstrom, Vesa Toskala, Marc-Andre Fleury, Rick DiPietro, Tim Thomas, Chris Osgood, Carey Price, Cam Ward, Martin Biron and Kari Lehtonen. That’s why Huet may not be among my top 15.

He was a lot better than Price last year. He wouldn’t have lose to Philthadelphia, thats for sure. Montreal should be crying their eyes out that they let him go...and for what? Nothing.
Yeah sure, Price WILL be good, but as a Pittsburgh fan, I know that a young goalie cannot and will not be your best defensemen as they say. Pens made Fleury the starter way to early, and who did they have to back him up? Sebass? The Moose? Big mistake on the part of Montreal, they will be in a world of hurt for a few years until he becomes the goalie everyone expects him to be, or fails wondrously.

Well of course Huet isn’t an elite goaltender right now, but he’s shown flashes of brilliance, and that’s a bankable and worthy gamble. No one ever says “Man I wish the Devils never picked up Scott Stevens” - That was a gamble that payed off. And Alexei Yashin was a gamble that didn’t pay dividends. That happens too… but you have to chance it sometimes.
Would you really want to cheer for a team that was committed to be average, or one that would take the risks it thought it would take to win?
