If Only It Were That Easy

from Craig Kanalley of Hawkey Central,

The Frenchman, Huet, is 1-2-1.  The Russian, Khabibulin, is 2-1-2.  For those keeping score at home, that’s 3 points for Cris and 6 for Nik....

This situation needs to be resolved, and it needs to be resolved quick.  It’s just a distraction, and it doesn’t need to be.  The players shouldn’t have to be looking over their shoulders wondering who’s in net one night to the next.  Especially when one goalie is clearly struggling compared to the other.

My recommendation is to unload Huet real cheap - he should have never been here to begin with.  Ottawa needs a goalie.  Give him to them for a draft pick.  Hopefully this mess is resolved sooner rather than later.

Oh boy…

It would be fun to ponder and dissect this as a very amusing - if highly unlikely - trade possibility. But I will steer clear of this one.

Yeah, just what the Sens want, another average goalie that’s paid like he’s a star.

What is it with people from Chicago hitting the panic button so insistently THIS early on in the season?  Ever heard of Chris Osgood and Dominic Hasek?  They split time almost equally last season...I think that worked out pretty well.  It’s this line of “NOW NOW NOW” thinking in Chicago that cost Denis Savard his job and having a fire sale on either of these guys would be a terrible move.  They are both quality tenders, and are of great value unless they start fighting with each other in practice or start affecting the rest of the team in a negative way.  Since when did having two good goaltenders turn into a problem that needs to be solved hastly?

The difference is that neither Osgood nor Hasek had much reason to feel threatened and both worked well within Detroit’s system, whereas Huet’s been trumpeted and Khabibulin shopped. Plus, Hasek and Osgood’s cap hit combined to total less than a third of what Chicago’s paying its ‘tenders. Panic soon? No, but it’s not a wave that will be rode to the end.

Good points, SENShobo.

The bottom line is that the Hawks are paying three times as much as Detroit did for equally capable goaltending. I’m sorry, on a given night “The Bulin Wall” is still capable of showing up, but he’s not the consistent stud he was four years ago. And Huet is overrated—he’s no better than Chris Osgood, just makes a lot more cash.

The “Frenchman” is Swiss.

Thanks for linking to my blog, Paul.  It is certainly a hot topic in Chicago at the moment.  I agree with your headline “If only it were that easy” and it’s not, but if they could swing a trade for Huet, I think this team improves a ton.  They also have two very good goalies in the AHL in Crawford and Niemi.  Hopefully this is resolved soon.

No he’s not.  The Frenchman is French.  Aebischer and Streit are Swiss.
