If Sakic Retires, Avs Become A Small-Market Team

from Terry Frei of the Denver Post,
If Joe Sakic retires, the Avalanche would have a modest payroll.
The team also would be fortunate to win 25 games next season.
And Denver fans would be introduced to small-market hockey.
In fact, if you tend to be cynical, and my hand is up, it’s not ridiculous to wonder if Sakic’s procrastination is being so docilely and philosophically accepted in the hallways of the Pepsi Center because it sets up a win-win scenario in the eyes of the bean counters.

Apparently market size (which I thought was largely population dependent) is actually driven by the presence or absence of Joe Sakic.
Or maybe when most people talk about market size they really have no clue what they are talking about.

I don’t buy that. Even as a Wings fan, the Avs have a solid base of talent, and without Sakic, they’re still a 7/8/9th-place finisher.

While I’m not quite so gloom-and-doom about it all, I do agree that Sakic’s departure will present problems.
Denver hockey fans are going ot have to realize that the late-90’s Avs are long gone, and that some lean years are ahead. They may go stretches without even making the playoffs.
I’m not sure how Denver will react to that. They’ve known nothing but competitive teams… but when Sakic, Roy, Forsberg, Foote, and co. are all finally gone… what will be next?

Like Greg said, people are dumb. They would still be a large market team, they would simply have a lower payroll and their owners would be making more and more money.
I call it the Pittsburgh Pirates system. The pirates are the worst in the league for years and barely spend any money on the team. However they are still in a good baseball city, and therefore the owners make 50 million a year in PROFIT. If they would spend the money they make, no one would consider them small market.

There are a lot of good players on this team with or without Sakic…Whether Joe returns or not, their biggest worry is still stopping the puck!
