If Wings Win The Cup, Chelios Will Need Some Help To Get His Name On It

Since he played in only 24 regular-season games, Chelios doesn’t qualify for a Stanley Cup inscription. A player must suit up for 41 games or appear in at least one game of the final series to get his name on Lord Stanley’s mug.
There is a second chance, however.
The Wings can, and likely will, petition to have Chelios added to the Stanley Cup list. But that might mean Chelios will require a favour from his old rival, National Hockey League commissioner Gary Bettman.
“I don’t really care what he says anyway,” Chelios said. “If that’s my biggest worry, I’m doing pretty well. If we win it, I’m not too worried about it. My name is already on the Cup.”

No offense to Chelly, but isn’t there a reason there’s a minimum number of games a players has to appear in to get his name on the cup?
Having said that, I have no doubt that his name will be on there, if the Wings win.

I thought you got on if you played in the playoffs at all… hmm guess I’m wrong..
Does that mean Helm wouldn’t get on either?

Let’s hope he does everyone a favor and retires after this season. Watching him play in the Chicago series has made it obvious how much of a liability he is out there on the ice. Just because you’re in shape doesn’t mean you have the speed to keep up with today’s players.

Thanks for posting this, Paul. I’ve been a bit worried about whether we’d see Lilja’s name on the cup should the Wings be fortunate enough to win it.
60 games played, and he’d have been a big contributor if the head would let him. Glad to see he eclipses the 41 game mark by a decent bit.
