Iginla On Fighting

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
Does it make any sense to have your best player missing that much time, especially if he’s only taking a fourth-liner to the box with him? Coach Mike Keenan figured Iginla had no choice in the matter and hinted that he thought an instigating penalty was warranted against McCormick for starting the fight.
Iginla, for his part, said he didn’t go looking for fights; that they tended to come in spurts for him; and that it may be 30 games before he gets into another scrap. But he also suggested that he couldn’t really play his game without resorting to fighting at some point when provoked.

“Didn’t have a choice in the matter”?
Look, I HATE McCormick and think he’s garbage. But Iginla DEFINITELY has a choice to fight or not. Everyone does. And while I think it’s important for him to fight every once and a while, I think it’s ridiculous when he fights twice in two games. He’s arguably one of the most-important players to his team in the league. And I think it’s very fair to point to things liek this as one reason Calgary can never get over the hump.

Next time before you comment, know what you’re talking about though. The past two fights I’ve seen, Iginla pulls off the helmet and visor. Given the chance to, he will pull them off before he dances.

Primis- I agree with you. You always have the choice to fight or not, and when your the superstar, sometimes your better off avoiding it than taking a 5 minute break in the box. If that gets you called a wimp, oh well, go out there and get a goal, that will shut them up. But when you play a physical game like Iginla does, he HAS to fight every once in a while. But he can pick and choose. He can choose to fight during games/times that don’t matter. He isn’t fighting to give a spark to his team, he’s fighting to keep his credibility as a physical player, and there is no reason to hurt your team just to do that.
